Russia floats out 13,800-ton nuclear-powered submarine ahead of sea trials 10%

Russia floated out the nuclear-powered cruise missile submarine Ulyanovsk, marking the start of its final construction phase before testing and delivery to the Russian Navy. 
The launch ceremony happened on June 28 at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk, where the submarine was moved from its construction hall into the water for outfitting and trials. 
Ulyanovsk reportedly weighs 13,800 tons and is a Project 885M (Yasen-M) multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine. 
After the float-out, workers will complete onboard systems while the vessel remains alongside the shipyard before it begins a series of harbor and sea tests. 
According to Sevmash, the submarine is scheduled to undergo mooring trials, sea trials, and state acceptance trials before its planned delivery in December 2027. 
Northern Fleet to receive the new submarine 
The Russian Navy expects Ulyanovsk to join the Northern Fleet after it completes its trials. 
At the launch ceremony, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Aleksandr Moiseyev said the submarine is part of a larger effort to modernize the country’s naval forces. 
“In June this year, the renowned Sevmash Shipyard laid down the nuclear-powered submarine Murmansk, while today the sixth cruiser in the Project’s series, the Ulyanovsk, is being rolled out of its slipway. 
This is evidence of systemic work to renew the fleet and raise the Navy’s combat capabilities. 
The construction of the Ulyanovsk sub will be completed afloat, and it will undergo a series of trials. 
The submarine will subsequently operate within the Red Banner Northern Fleet and continue the glorious traditions of its predecessors,” he said . 
The ceremony was attended by senior government, naval, and defense industry officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Trutnev and representatives from the Malakhit Design Bureau, which designed the submarine. 
Part of Russia’s expanding Yasen-M fleet 
Ulyanovsk is the latest addition to Russia’s ongoing Yasen-M submarine construction program. 
The original Project 885 Severodvinsk entered service with the Northern Fleet in 2014. 
It was followed by the improved Yasen-M design, beginning with Kazan. 
According to the shipyard, four Yasen-M submarines, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Arkhangelsk, are already in naval service alongside Severodvinsk. 
The shipyard describes Ulyanovsk as the sixth submarine in the modernized series to complete hull construction. 
The production line is also continuing. 
In June, Sevmash laid down Murmansk, identified by the shipyard as the ninth Yasen-M submarine in the overall series. 
Built for long-range naval operations 
The Yasen-M class is designed to serve as one of the Russian Navy’s primary multipurpose attack submarines. 
Its missions include anti-submarine warfare, anti-ship operations, land attack, and intelligence gathering. 
The submarines are equipped with heavyweight torpedo tubes and vertical launch systems capable of carrying cruise missiles such as the Kalibr family and P-800 Oniks. 
Russian officials have also associated the class with the Tsirkon hypersonic missile program, although operational weapon configurations have not been publicly disclosed. 
Powered by a nuclear reactor, the submarines can remain deployed for extended periods without the fuel limitations of conventionally powered vessels. 
Sevmash also says the design includes quieter propulsion, upgraded sonar and combat systems, and a hull structure intended to reduce its acoustic signature.
