Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare's investigation into the ICE shooting death of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo will get a $2.5 million boost with the approval of a funding provision Thursday.
Commissioners unanimously approved the funds for the independent investigation into the shooting death of Salgado Araujo by a federal immigration officer in Houston's East End last month.
The longtime Houston man's death drew national attention and raised questions surrounding the incident — which federal authorities said happened when he attempted to run over an ICE agent with his vehicle.
Passengers in the vehicle at the time of the shooting have disputed ICE's account.

Houston Public Media first reported last month that the district attorney's office would conduct an independent investigation into the shooting.
Several entities — including the Texas Rangers and the Department of Public Safety — are also investigating the circumstances of the shooting.
On Thursday, Teare told commissioners that additional funding is necessary to carry out the investigation.
The funds won't go into the office's general fund, but rather into a bucket of money dedicated to resources for the investigation.
If the office determines that no criminal charges apply in the case, the office may not use the remainder of the funds, he said.
During a press conference before the vote on Thursday, Teare said the funding for the investigation will last for three years, but stopped short of saying whether he thought the investigation would take that long.
"Ideally it won't be three years, but this is different than even if we are investigating and prosecuting a state law enforcement officer, because the people we are investigating are federal agents," he said.
It will fund overtime hours for investigators, additional personnel and possible outside counsel for litigation.
In a statement to Houston Public Media on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the district attorney's office did not say what resources are still needed for the investigation, or how additional funds would be beneficial to the investigation, which Teare said is moving rapidly.
Whenever a civilian is killed by an on-duty member of law enforcement, the office conducts a full and independent investigation, according to the statement.
“That requires real resources and manpower to carry out a thorough, robust investigation,” the spokesperson said.
“Since day one, commissioners court has supported our work, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to ensuring we have the resources needed to seek the truth and follow the evidence in this case wherever it may lead.”
Commissioner Adrian Garcia, who voted in favor of the funding, said the county shouldn't be responsible for doing the federal government's job.
“If we can't depend on them to provide us facts and provide us insight into any challenges or concerns, then we have to depend on our ability to do whatever we can locally,” Garcia said.
“We are going to do what we need to do.
While we have a local ability to find truth and evidence, then that's what we have to do.”
Commissioner Tom Ramsey said answers are owed to Salgado Araujo's family.
“We grieve with your family,” Ramsey said.
“This $2.5 million is a small token.”
