Our next weathermaker is inbound and will make Tuesday afternoon and evening stormy and soggy, with damaging winds.
The day begins with mostly cloudy to nearly overcast skies.
A quick-moving but rather potent system will skirt east along Eastern Canada, dropping a warm front through New England on Tuesday, and a cold front passes on Wednesday.
This warm front will pull surging moisture from the south into Boston and the rest of Southern New England, turning the air quite muggy and sparking scattered showers and thunderstorms — starting in the early afternoon and lasting into the night.
Some of the rain could produce occasional brief, heavy downpours.
Some of the evening storms may actually have some pop to them, with damaging wind gusts the main hazard, especially across Western Connecticut and the Berkshires.
As we lose daylight, we lose storm energy, which decreases the chances of a severe thunderstorm reaching Boston.
Speaking of pop, regardless of whether a storm will turn severe or not, there could be some strong downdrafts at times across all of Southern New England away from Cape Cod.
This means a burst of heavy rain could lead to some excessive runoff and isolated flooding, mainly with the storms arriving later in the evening.
Tuesday morning will begin with mostly cloudy skies until overcast takes over.
The scattered showers and general thunderstorms will begin to break out around Greater Boston sometime between 3 and 6 p.m., with steady to heavy rain likely arriving between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Of course, if you live west of Greater Boston, you may see storms a couple of hours earlier.
Wednesday will see scattered showers in the morning with a line of scattered showers and storms forming in the early afternoon, and likely wrapping up before sunset.
Between the warm front passing on Tuesday and the cold front sparking more showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday, two-day rain totals may vary from town to town, but can generally reach nearly an inch across Southern New England, with localized totals of 2 to 2.5 inches along the southern coast.
With a good soaking expected for Greater Boston and the south/southeast, this is one of those systems that will help further alleviate drought conditions across the region.
