The first round of the NBA playoffs begins Saturday with four games. The defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder are the number one seed in the Western Conference for the third straight season as the squad tries to win its second ever title since moving from Seattle in 2008. They play either the eighth seated Phoenix Suns or the 10-seated Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
To get you ready for the postseason, Chris Branch joins us now.
He's a senior writer for The Athletic. So Chris, when you look out west, what team has the best chance to potentially deny the Thunder a second straight trip to the NBA Finals?
>> Hey. Yeah. Uh, the West is stacked, but the answer is the San Antonio Spurs, the number two seed, and it is all because of Victor Winyama.
Uh, the NBA has never seen a player like him before, frankly.
He's 7'4. He can shoot a three. He can handle the ball. Uh, the Spurs are 4-1 against the Thunder this season, and I think they're the only team that can beat him.
In the Eastern Conference, the Boston Celtics were thought to be rebuilding this season. They ended up the second seed in the East.
How have they exceeded expectations and can this team get to the finals?
>> They absolutely can get to the finals.
I think they're one of the best stories of the season just because their best player tears his Achilles last year.
Everybody thinks they're going to go downward and they just remained amazing.
Jaylen Brown is a huge reason for that.
Jason Tatum, the the player with the torn Achilles, is back now.
Uh, they can easily make the finals and I think they're the East favorite.
>> All right, I can't let you go without asking who you believe will have the confetti raining down in them as this year's NBA champs.
>> I hate to say it, I'm going to be boring. It's going to be the Thunder again.
It's too easy. They are the best team by far. I'm sorry, but I have to say that
>> boring's okay. We'll take boring. Chris Branch, thank you.
Thank you.
