After emerging as an unexpected mediator in upcoming negotiations between the US and Iran, Pakistan has been preparing for the arrival of representatives of both countries with the beginning of talks on Saturday in Islamabad.
Their role in the negotiations surfaced a few weeks ago.
They helped the US deliver the initial 15-point plan to Iran and passed messages between the two countries.
At the 11th hour, when threats by US President Donald Trump escalated to a social media post saying that the whole country can be taken out unless Iran open the Strait of Hormuz, Pakistan and other countries were working behind the scenes to reach an agreement to postpone the deadline.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif confirmed the ceasefire on social media and the US and Iran followed.
Pakistan has actually done something phenomenal uh and bringing two entities to the negotiating table that were like an hour away from destroying, from destruction.
Uh and of course, Pakistan also provided face-saving to both the United States of America and Iran.
Previous US-Iran negotiations have been facilitated by countries in the Middle East, but as they came under Iranian fire, Pakistan stepped forward.
Analysts have said its proximity to Iran and its long-standing ties to the US and Gulf states give it a unique position at a time when direct communication remains constrained.
Pakistan also has a lot at stake.
A continuation of the conflict would put its economic and energy security at risk.
With a track record as a mediator behind the scenes dating back to 1972, the world is now watching Pakistan as it waits to see whether the talks could lead to an end to the war.
