U.S. completes retaliatory strikes against Iran after helicopter downing 36%

With the United States military announcing that retaliatory strikes against Iran are now complete.
Uh the multiple rounds of strikes on Iranian targets including air defense and radar sites coming just hours after an Iranian drone took down a US Army Apache helicopter carrying two US service members.
The soldiers sustained minor injuries and were quickly rescued and taken to safety by a military sea drone similar to the one that you're seeing right here.
Let's bring in our international correspondent Matt Bradley who's in Doha.
Uh Matt, what can you tell us about this rescue here?
>> Yeah, what we know from the rescue is what we've known for much of the past several hours.
Now, this is as President Trump said, it was fine and that the uh the pilots, the two of them who were rescued were fine.
And in fact, in to the Wall Street Journal in a telephone conversation, President Trump really
diminished the impact and the importance of the shooting down of that Apache helicopter.
As you mentioned, that helicopter was uh was basically shot down by the Iranians.
We heard that from the Iranians later on.
This incident itself happened, it sounds like, well more than 12 hours ago uh into yesterday morning.
Uh but, this is something that we've been hearing more and more about throughout the day.
President Trump was the one who filled in the further detail that it was the Iranians who shot it down.
The Iranians came out with the statement saying that if there were to be any foreign bodies or foreign uh forces in Iranian airspace who had been hostile, then they do have the right to shoot it down.
And that is what then elicited this latest US response and retaliation.
>> Do we know what was hit in this uh wave of strikes?
>> Yes. So, what we've heard from Iranian state television was that we're looking at basically some well-worn grooves in the retaliation that we've already been seeing. really a well-established pattern of tit-for-tat.
The US struck several sites around Bandar Abbas, Qeshm Island, and it sounds like the town of Sirik.
All of those on the southwestern coast of Iran, right near the Strait of Hormuz.
So, these attacks, again, even we heard from Iranian state television, Iranian state media just now, saying that there were the sound of impacts for according to them, the umpteenth time.
So, even Iranian state media seem to have some kind of fatigue, it sounds like, in
in once again reporting on these retaliatory strikes by the US.
Remember, it was only just before the weekend, around Saturday, that the US struck similar targets.
So, these were basically, as far as we know now, towns and Qeshm Island where oil installations, oil and gas export installations, are very thickly placed.
So, these would be strategic sites, probably very important to the Iranian economy, very important to the Iranian effort to maintain its side of the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
But again, at this early hour, we don't have any deliberate or any, excuse me, detailed information on exactly what was struck.
only the kind of the neighborhood that was struck.
And again, that was struck.
And again, that area around the southwest coast of Iran normally hosts either a lot of Iranian efforts to try to block up the Strait of Hormuz or to export oil and gas.
>> So, a chopper shot down, waves of strikes. What does that do to peace talks right now?
>> Well, I can tell you what it does to countries like Doha, where I am right now.
This is a country that is allied with the United States.
It had been in Iranian crosshairs in the past.
It hasn't really been the site of any attacks in just the past couple of months.
In fact, it's been well more than two months since Iran had fired missiles or any projectiles like drones at the Gulf.
Normally, we've heard over the past couple of weeks, Iran has retaliated against American retaliation against two different Gulf states, Kuwait and Bahrain.
And now, at this early hour, we've only really heard some initial reports that there were explosions over Bahrain, not over Kuwait.
So, this is going to be a really yet another bracing and troubling development for the Gulf countries, American allies who rely on stability to maintain their reputation as good places to do business.
As you can see,
countries like this, like Qatar, do very very well, as you can see from the skyline, from being islands of stability in the Middle East.
And over the past couple of months, ever since the US and Israel started firing at Iran, we've seen that reputation shaken.
And it's one of the reasons why a lot of these Gulf states have really become even more deeply suspicious of their neighbor across the Strait of Hormuz, Iran.
