What exploded during the pandemic was micro dramas.
Chinese micro dramas are typically 30 to 90 seconds per episode, packaged into series of 50 to 100 episodes.
The first handful of episodes are free, and after that, viewers pay small amounts to unlock each subsequent episode.
At first, the idea of taking a traditional 1-hour drama and chopping it into 60-second vertical micro dramas for smartphones seemed absurd.
But TikTok's super powerful algorithm rewired the viewing behavior of an entire generation, and many openly admit that long-form dramas feel too slow unless they're watching it at 1.5x speed.
That's why the appetite for compressed vertical storytelling exploded so suddenly.
By 2024, the micro drama industry had already surpassed the entire Chinese film industry in annual revenue, pulling in roughly 7 billion US dollars.
Analysts predict that this format could rival or even surpass long-form streaming within a few years in China.
