Spider-Man: Brand New Day" debuts with biggest domestic opening weekend ever
At the box office, Spider-Man Brand New Day swung to a massive $360 million in its domestic debut, making it the biggest opening weekend ever.
It surpassed figures from another Marvel movie, 2019's Avengers Endgame.
The Odyssey, which also featured three of the lead actors from Brand New Day, slid to second place with 51 million, and Toy Story 5 raked in 6.3 million.
So, joining us now is Brooks Barnes, the chief Hollywood correspondent for the New York Times, to break down the movie blockbuster.
So, Brooks, we knew this movie was going to be big, but was it expected to be record-breaking big?
>> It wasn't expected to do this.
You know, going in, they thought it would do about 200 million domestic, which would have been the biggest movie in 2 years.
But then, you know, people just kept swarming, coming up, not uh, you know, walk-up business.
Saturday morning, they said 325 million they thought for the weekend, and then obviously, even that was was quite low.
So, um, you know, a lot of the studio itself, the executives kind of sounded shell-shocked.
They didn't expect [clears throat] it.
>> Yeah, you wonder if people were trying to get the Odyssey IMAX ticket and went,
"Okay, well, let's see Spider-Man instead." I don't know, but it worked.
>> It could. I mean, what were there a couple of big takeaways that, you know,
you can start You don't want to read too much into one weekend, but this is definitely, you know, the biggest of all time, not not accounting for inflation, but the biggest raw number since before the pandemic.
And, you know, for a while, Hollywood has been sort of just battered by these you know, bad box office, all of the movies are dead, it's all about streaming.
And so, at a societal level, the number of young people that came out, Gen Z, for this movie, and there were a couple of other examples, they've really rediscovered going to the movies as communal experience, right?
And that's that's super important for Hollywood.
Hollywood. And Hollywood has also changed. It's adapted uh in recent years to, you know, casting.
You made the point, Zendaya, uh Tom Holland, uh some others uh both in Odyssey and this movie, popular with young audiences, storytelling choices.
So, Hollywood itself is is adapting, has n't, you know, raised a white flag, it's over.
Um and I guess the third thing I I would say that portends well for the the box office.
Uh certainly coming up, we've got big movies, Dune, the third Dune, Avengers: Doomsday.
Um certainly coming up, we've got big movies, Dune, the third Dune, Avengers: Doomsday. Um it it the the business has returned to its mechanics, meaning after the the pandemic, there was a shortage of movies, then there came strikes, which was a shortage of movies.
Now, it's kind of a big movie for someone every weekend, and that really is important.
>> Yeah, you're spot-on. My kids went and saw Spider-Man this weekend.
So, there you go. There's part of the demographic right there.
>> can thank [laughter] you for your dollars.
>> Yeah, right. All right, Brooks Barnes, Brooks, thanks so much.
>> Thanks.
