President Trump is attending game three of the NBA finals tonight between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs,
meaning heavy security at Manhattan's Madison Square Garden. Police barricades, street closures, thousands of police officers are all surrounding the famous arena.
The Knicks told fans to get to the venue hours before the game begins and to be ready for airport style screenings. And another change generating fan backlash, there will be no watch party outside.
Joining us now is Anna Shakar who covers crime for CBS News. I mean, this is to say this is a busy section of Manhattan is an understatement.
That's right. Tourist heavy, commuter heavy. Now you've got all these fans. What What are people going to see and what is there that they won't see?
>> Well, there's a huge barricade around, so you can't even walk. But there are going to be drones flying high in the air that they won't be even aware of, monitoring in high definition exactly what is happening outside around Madison Square Garden. And there are canines underground who are will be sniffing for explosives and the like.
This is a massive security operation with the president coming there. That is already that is a top top high security event.
>> I mean can you really tell people that they can't be around this area in Manhattan?
>> Well, even without this event, you have tens of thousands of people commuting, visiting, going through the Amtrak station, the subway station. It's going to be a mess. It's going to take hours and some people likely will start to get everybody through those magnetometers.
>> President Trump's going to be the first sitting president to attend the NBA finals. What does it take to uh to do that to secure this type? I mean, look, we're looking at these aerials right now and we can see these lines of fans trying to file inside. What What is the behemoth behind securing this event?
Well, the NYPD knows how to do this, but when the president is coming, you've got the Secret Service running point on this. And remember, Trump actually had a rally here in 2024. So, it can be done,
but you've got not just the political side. It's not just a rally, it's millions of fans are obsessed with this.
And so, it is very, very unique. You might even have fans from overseas having flown in to attend this game.
>> W All right, Anna Shakar, thank you.
