President Trump says Iran has released an American citizen who was banned from leaving the country since 2024 under the Biden administration.
The president took to Truth Social saying this is a sign of goodwill by Iran.
It's true.
This marks the first American released by Iran since 2023, although there have been about five more Americans who are still believed to be wrongfully detained.
Our next guest says "Tehran is signaling it wants an off-ramp." Here to further that discussion is the executive director of the Foundation for Democracy, Jonathan Schanzer.
Jonathan, you really see something in that release of this woman.
>> Well, look, I I would just say that this is at least a sign of softening on the part of the Islamic Republic at a time where we're watching escalation across the Strait of Hormuz and beyond.
It's a deviation from all of the other messages that we're getting out of Tehran right now, which to me signifies that there's something else going on.
Of course, we've got Adam Boehler who's been that envoy for the Trump administration who holds this portfolio and that may be separate from what Stephen Witcoff or Marco Rubio or J.D. Vance are doing as they reach out to the Iranian regime.
>> So, how much damage have we done over the last five days?
It seems it's really expansive and yesterday we hit the 388th Battalion over in uh in Iran and that's a group over in the Baluchistan area and that is further into Iran than ever before.
Why do you think we're doing that?
>> Look, I think what we're looking for right now are viable targets on the part of this regime.
You know, uh when you look at that first wave of attacks that we carried out over those um you know, initial weeks of the war, we did a lot of damage to the regime.
I think it's taken some time for the US military to acquire a new target bank.
So, in other words, we're looking further and deeper into Iran to look for things that we haven't hit that are still significant, that are worth these valuable munitions that we expend.
I mean, these are uh exquisite munitions. They cost a lot of money. We don't want to waste them on weak targets.
So, we're looking for things further into the regime.
And I got to say, I think that right now the president is doing something that's really interesting. I mean, we're expanding those targets while trying to not expand the war significantly.
So, this is kind of a tightrope act that the president is engaging in right now.
We've got to weaken the regime. We've got to show that tough resolve. But, at the same time, we don't want to see a massive escalation.
So, it's an interesting balancing act that he's trying to carry out.
>> So, he's thinking about two things. Karg It's on Tuesday's meeting the reports out of the situation room where Karg Island finally take it.
Might need some troops on the ground. And pickax, let's blow it up the best we can. We have not really touched that facility in a significant way.
Should he do both? Should he do one?
>> Look, I I think both are incredibly important. [clears throat] Karg
Island is obviously crucial for the Iranian regime's income.
This is the major source of oil exports, which of course means this is the major source for funding for this regime.
To the extent that we can neutralize this while also preserving that infrastructure so that the Iranian people can enjoy it when if and when this regime falls, I think that's really important.
And then pickax mountain, of course, this is kind of their Alamo here.
I mean, it is their underground facility where they can continue to try to advance that nuclear program.
To the extent that we can neutralize it, we should. The question is how to get into it because we cannot
just bomb it through uh conventional weapons from the air. We're going to need something a lot bigger than what we probably um have used so far uh in this conflict.
This would mean probably introducing new weapons that might make folks a little uncomfortable, but I do think it's going to be really important to neutralize this site.
>> No one's ever attacked this country since they've been attacking us.
It's the first time a president has degrading one of our enemies that declared war on us on a daily basis. As they've said,
"Death to America" is not a phrase, it's a policy.
And I go back to the one statement in the MOU that's so problematic. It says, "Iran will conduct dialogue with the Sultan of Oman to define the future administration of maritime services in the strait."
This is an evil regime who lies, but they're going on what was written, and that's problematic. Thanks so much, Jonathan.
