The WNBA's 30th anniversary season tips off tonight.
There are two additional teams this season, bringing the league total to 15.
The WNBA and players union recently came to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement that spans the next 7 years.
Annie Costabile is a senior writer for The Athletic and joins us now.
Thank you so much for being here.
What are some of the storylines you're most excited for?
Oh my gosh, where to start?
There's so many.
I think for me, the most intriguing thing is all of the movement that took place in free agency and how
some of these players are going to work on their new teams.
I think also when you look at the two expansion teams in Portland and in Toronto, how they pieced together these rosters and whether or not they're really going to live up to the history that was made by the Valkyries last season.
You know, that's now the standard.
The expectation for expansion teams is, okay, the Valkyries made it to the playoffs, like it's certainly attainable.
So, the question of whether or not these two teams will.
And then of course, you know, these historic salaries and how that's going to elevate the game overall, not only in terms of, you know, the players who are committing to play in the WNBA from an international standpoint, but also the development at a young age in terms of
this now being a very, um, lucrative career opportunity for young talent.
>> What are some names that you're watching?
Yeah, I think for me, some of the names immediately jump off the table are
Alanna Smith in Dallas, how she's going to work with, um, you know, Paige Bueckers.
I think that was a huge signing for the Wings in terms of turning them into a playoff contender.
Then when you're in LA, you think about Nneka Ogwumike rejoining her Sparks team, uh, the team she won a championship with, was an MVP with.
And then you head back to the East and you're thinking about Angel Reese in Atlanta and whether or not she's going to be a player that gets that team over this first round playoff hump that they've been struggling to surpass and and whether or not she really is the missing piece in a championship.
There then you head up to New York and it's Sotu Sabally and how she is joining a, you know, already,
you know, tight group and and Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, Jonquel Jones.
And then you got to talk about the reigning champs, the Las Vegas Aces and obviously they bring their core back led by four-time MVP A'ja Wilson, but they went out and got this dynamic guard and you know, and and it's it's just fantastic to see how and Kennedy Carter, excuse me, I didn't even say her and Kennedy Carter and it's fantastic to see
or it's going to be fantastic to see how
that that comes together for them.
You're making me excited, Annie Costabile.
Thank you so much for joining us.
Yeah, of course.
