President Trump is signaling that an end to the war in Iran could be on the horizon.
He says the US could leave the region in approximately two to three weeks.
The president will address the nation tonight for what he says is an important update on Iran.
That will take place at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
And of course, we will bring it to you live.
Take a quick listen to what Mr. Trump had to say yesterday about his endgame for the operation.
>> Now, regime change was not one of the things I had as a goal.
I had one goal.
They will have no nuclear weapon.
And that goal has been attained.
They will not have nuclear weapons.
Uh but we're finishing the job and I think within maybe two weeks, maybe a couple of days longer to do the job.
>> Now, the president also says it will be up to other nations to get their oil from the Strait of Hummus.
In a phone call with Awa Jang yesterday, he said, quote, "If they want oil, come up and grab it. I'm not a gatekeeper for them."
They weren't there for us.
In an interview with the British outlet, The Telegraph, President Trump said he's strongly considering pulling the US out of NATO after allies there declined to help secure the waterway.
He called the alliance a paper tiger.
And the fighting continues in the Middle East.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military says it hit Tyran with widescale strikes overnight while Iran fired missiles and drones at several US Gulf allies and at Israel.
According to the UK, a tanker was hit off the coast of Qatar.
We've got team coverage on all these angles for you this morning.
Holly Williams is in Tel Aviv with the latest on the fighting.
But let's begin with CBS News White House reporter Olivia Raldi.
Olivia, good morning. Uh President Trump says the war could come to a close in a matter of weeks.
What does he mean by that? What's his measurement?
>> Well, good morning to you, Errol. Yes.
Yesterday, President Trump said two to three weeks for the end to the war in Iran.
He says that the US has been meeting its military objectives and the primary objective was to make sure that Iran never has a nuclear weapon.
The president says the US is now finishing the job inside of Iran.
He also added that many parts of Iran's military, including their navy and their air force, have been decimated in the air.
raid campaign that the US and Israel have been carrying out over the skies of Iran.
But as you know and as we have talked about, the US is also pursuing a diplomatic option as these strikes have continued to ramp up in Iran.
However, now President Trump is saying he doesn't think he needs a deal in order to end the war.
Take a listen to what he told reporters yesterday in the Oval Office.
>> Iran doesn't have to make a deal.
No.
Yeah. I've spoken to a lot of people.
It's a it's a new regime.
Now, it's
possible that we'll have a deal because they want to make a deal.
They want to make a deal more than I want to make a deal.
But in a fairly short period of time, we'll be finished.
They will not be able to do a nuclear weapon for years.
Now, the president also said there could be a deal between Washington and Tyrron, but added that it doesn't matter whether or not Iran comes to the table or not
because he feels that the military objectives have been met uh and that the US is ready to end this war.
This comes as gas prices at home are hitting new highs, fresh highs of $4 across the nation.
And we know tonight the president is going to address the nation at 900 p.m. on this very topic.
>> All right, there it is.
406 today and 402 yesterday.
the price of an average gallon.
Olivia, thank you.
Joining us from Washington, let's jump now to the Middle East.
CBS News senior foreign correspondent Holly Williams is in Tel Aviv continuing her reporting there.
Holly, as you just heard, the president is hinting this war with Iran could end in weeks.
But from your vantage point, is there any sign this morning that the fighting is easing at all?
>> Not at all, Errol. Uh, in fact, the sirens rang out multiple times here in Tel Aviv this morning.
We were in the bomb shelter, I think, four times. Uh, Israeli first responders say that 14 people were injured here by missile fire this morning, including an 11year-old girl with serious injuries, uh, shrapnel wounds to her limbs.
We're also seeing reports this morning that Iran hit a tanker off the coast of Qatar Kuwait airport again and started a fire and a business facility in Bakra.
Also late yesterday, Israel's military said that it had launched a wave of strikes over 24 hours targeting 20 Iranian weapons production and research site.
So there's lots of talk about ending the war, Arrol, but we're certainly not seeing it yet here on the ground in the Middle East.
>> And so considering all of that, Holly, I mean, the president seems to be hinting that the US would just walk away from what's happening in the Strait of Huz and allow uh the rest of the fighting to continue.
I would imagine from from what you can tell where could things go from here?
>> I guess one big question is sort of what has this war achieved?
That's what people will analyze in the aftermath of this war.
Militarily the US and Israel
