New ballot count shows city councilwoman Nithya Raman moving ahead of Spencer Pratt as election workers continue to count hundreds of thousands of ballots here at the LA County processing center in the city of industry.
The latest update from the Los Angeles County Registrar Recorder shows Nithya Raman moving into second place with just over 196,000 votes.
Spencer Pratt has slipped to third place with over 193,000 votes.
The two remain in a close race for second place and a spot in November's runoff to face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass.
Pratt shared on X Monday, "We're dealing with a fraction of a percentage point difference.
There's still hundreds of thousands of votes outstanding and LA officials have given us the next 3 weeks to count.
As of Monday, election officials say about 83% of ballots have been counted so far with an estimated 368,000 ballots still left to process.
US Attorney Bill Asaleh says his office is investigating California's election practices and has accused the state of blocking a federal audit of voter rolls.
Asaleh argues that California allows some first-time voters to verify their identity using a broad range of documents.
He says those documents can include gym membership cards, employer ID cards, credit or debit cards, prescription drug labels, and insurance cards.
Asaleh says voter registration records should be reviewed to ensure compliance with federal law.
California officials argue that state privacy laws limit access to voter registration data.
The legal dispute is now before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
US House Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday, >> "I believe that there's voter fraud going on all across California.
They're still counting votes. They have entire countries in India. They can count, you know, billions of votes in 24 hours and California takes them weeks, a month.
You're seeing that happen with Spencer Pratt in the mayor's race of Los Angeles.
It is corrupt on its face. It it opens up obviously the appearance of impropriety and and California's got to do better.
Johnson said that in California three Republican incumbents led on election night in 2024 but lost ground as more ballots were counted.
