Deed theft has come into the spotlight in New York City.

It's gotten so bad that Mayor Zoram Amdani has opened a deed theft prevention office.

This comes after a city council member was arrested while protesting an eviction tied to an alleged deed theft case.

NTD's Shawn Marshall has details.

New York City's new mayor's office of deed theft prevention is looking to stop scammers from stealing homes through fake paperwork.

Over the last decade, thousands of deed theft complaints have been filed across New York City.

So what's so devastating about this is this is happening just to everyday Americans and people are working so hard to get into their homes.

Affordability is the biggest issue that's facing so many Americans.

But what exactly is deed theft?

I met with Jenna Staer, a global real estate advisor to find out.

So deed theft is when someone takes title to someone's home without that homeowner being aware.

It sounds crazy, but it's actually becoming very common.

There's been thousands of cases that have happened here in New York City, specifically in Queens and Brooklyn.

And this is really serious because people have worked so hard to get into their home.

Home ownership is really the cornerstone of generational wealth building.

So to think that somebody can take that away from you just by fraud is really scary and disturbing.

New York City Council member Chio was recently arrested while defending his constituent from eviction shortly after the council member got out of jail.

The mayor opened up the deed theft prevention office.

3,500 deed theft complaints were filed in New York City, primarily in Brooklyn and Queens, between 2013 and 2023.

Over the past few years, the issue has escalated with 517 complaints registered in 2025 alone, more than three times the 149 lodged in 2023.

There are a number of those in elected office who have led efforts to tackle this scourge.

So, the mayor's office is really focused right now on being proactive rather than just reactive.

So, that's through education.

They're getting teams together.

They're working with law enforcement and really making people aware that this is something that can happen to them.

Deed theft isn't just a New York City problem.

It's a problem all over the United States.

So, many people don't even know about deed theft.

So the number one thing that you can do is be informed, be educated about it, understand that this is something that can happen to you.

And then if you are a victim of it, where I do have clients across the country that have been victims of this, you can reach out to law enforcement.

There are people that are put in place that you can reach out to.

So one, this never happens to you again, and also it can maybe help prevent it from happening to somebody else.

Attorney Peter White will lead a coordinated citywide strategy to prevent fraud.

The new office will also support impacted residents and strengthen enforcement.
