Troy Jackson set to become Democratic Maine Senate nominee, replacing Platner 94%

Troy Jackson is now the presumptive Democratic nominee in the main Senate race.
The former state senator and
candidate for governor is set to officially be nominated this Saturday at the party's convention.
It's been only about two weeks since former candidate Graham Platner dropped out following a sexual assault allegation which he denies.
For more, let's bring in CBS News political director Finn Gomez.
So Finn, how did Jackson consolidate support so quickly?
Yeah, Jackson, a former logger Lindsay who calls himself a pickup progressive has effectively secured the Democratic nomination in this crucial main Senate race.
Uh not winning it officially been winning the majority of the state delegates who will officially nominate a replacement for Graham Platner next Saturday.
Look, while they are not legally bound to support him, more than twothirds of the 600 delegates have committed to voting for Jackson at that state
wide convention. Lindsay Jackson dominated the county level meetings this past weekend uh that selected those delegates with his rivals falling far far behind and his two most organized competitors main secretary of state Shenna Bellowos and former health uh official Narav Shaw they both dropped out of the race on Sunday because of that.
I think Democrats looked at the calendar more than anything Lindsay they lost their nominee just a few weeks ago
and there wasn't much of an appetite for a prolonged family fight.
It also shows that Jackson is someone who can uh organize.
He does have that background and he has that ability and he showed it this weekend.
Uh so now Democrats have to pivot and turn the page to focus uh against uh the incumbent in the race, Senator Susan Collins, who's running for her sixth term.

How is he going to move forward?
basically by trying to endear himself to Platner voters or trying to distance himself as much as possible.
>> Lindsay, that's a great question and it's and it really shows the delicate balance that Jackson has to make here.
Uh look, he Jackson has said Platiner made the right decision by stepping aside and condemning his allegations,
but he's also trying to appeal to that core Platner support that he has, that base support that he has uh and really try to show that he is as progressive as a platner movement that that the former um uh oyster farm oyster farmer tried to build.
And I think that that's what he is trying to do now is appeal to those platiner progressives.
At the same time, he's not trying to spend the next three months talking about Grant Platin.
Democrats and and Jackson leading them are trying to turn the page here. He put out a statement this morning saying that he's focused on Susan Collins, uh, who is considered one of the most vulnerable Republicans on the midterm landscape.
And I think that the faster Democrats can turn the page here, the faster they can try to change the subject to that one of uh, Susan Collins. Their focus now, they tell me, is on Susan Collins.
Lindsay, >> let's talk about the South Carolina Senate race to replace Lindsey Graham.
How's that shaping up?
>> Look, this just got a lot more interesting.
Lindsay, interimm Senator Darlene Graham, Lindsey Graham's sister, announced on Fox on Monday that she is quote in, ending days of speculation about whether she'd seek the full Senate term.
She said after talking with her family and praying about it that she feels quote an inner peace about the decision to jump in, even even saying uh that the that that there's tremendous pressure of course that comes with her decision.
Uh her entry immediately reshapes the Republican primary. Uh she's already benefiting benefiting uh from her her brother's statewide name.

That's a significant part of campaigning and President Trump has publicly encouraged her uh to run.
she now joins a growing field that includes Congressman Ralph Norman and Russell Fry, both uh conservative Republicans.
But Trump's backing and the family legacy, political legacy, uh that goes along with her decision means that she could jump in with real momentum.
but interesting that both Norman and Fry got in after Trump essentially backed Darlene Graham.
Just saying maybe the impact of an endorsement maybe has uh lessened a little bit.
Uh but the reason why also Lindsay that Trump has not and will not bag Norman is because Norman was the uh was supported Nikki Haley during the 2024 presidential cycle and you know and and the the Trump the president and and the White House have a long memory.
