'Dreams of Violets' AI-generated film to debut at Tribeca Film Festival 90%

The 75minute drama based on Iran's anti-government protests earlier this year is the first of its kind to screen as part of a major film festival's official lineup.
What went through your mind when you learned that the Tribeca Film Festival was going to have you premiere your movie?
>> It was kind of shocking because we were in the middle of kind of sending it out to other festivals and other the major ones like they were like not having it.
>> The Dreams of Violet's director Ash Cusha says he mainly used Clling AI to generate these scenes, but he says he wrote it and handled post-prouction like editing and sound design.
Kusha says at its core the movie is about the human experience a subject that hits close to home for the Iranian filmmaker.
>> I come from Iran have first experience of living there being prosecuted when the uh brutal crackdown happened. Uh it it kind of was a moment for me to basically not stay silent and do something about it. He turned to AI for its low cost and quick turnaround, saying that the entire project cost only $2,000 and took about 2 and a half months to complete, pretty much by himself.
That incredible new efficiency causing concern for many across an industry that still employs hundreds of thousands of people.
According to government data, film and TV jobs already at their lowest levels since the 1990s other than the pandemic.
The push back is loud.
>> Tribeca accepted a fully AI feature film.
What the man?
>> Not just around the Tribeca Film Festival, but across Hollywood.
>> That's award-winning director Guiermo del Toro at Con.
There were also reports that another AI generated film Hellgrind was featured at the prestigious festival.
While in reality, it was screened at a theater in town and was not officially part of the competition.
>> Kidding.
>> Controversy also over RuPaul's upcoming movie, Stop That Train.
This is the perfect time for a big queer breakout, but the one that we're getting is tainted by AI.
>> Unfortunately, I am no longer going to go see it. The train is not running.
>> The film's director pushing back on the AI backlash, posting, quote, "There are a sum total of zero shots conceived by AI. Not enough to silence the critics who point to an AI company listed in the credits. We did not get further comment from the director. It all comes as some big stars are leaning in like Martin Scorsesei and Ben Affleck. Back in the Big Apple, Tbeca Film Festival's co-founder defended selecting an AI movie in a statement to NBC News, saying it's a powerful example of how emerging technologies like AI can be used not simply as tools of innovation, but as vehicles for deeply human storytelling."
The director of Dreams of Violets tells us he understands the controversy.
What do you say to the backlash right now?
>> I think it's valid. I I agree with them.
I hate like 90% of what the AI output in media is.
>> But adds that using this new tech to make something worth watching will always require some manpower.
>> This is at the beginning of um thousands of jobs being created because the more we get into the capabilities of AI, the more operators we need.
>> Easier than ever to make a movie.
An industry embracing AI will likely depend on what the audience wants to watch.
