million. Now, the strong forecast israising questions about whether
audiences are growing tired of superhero movies or they're simply becoming moreselective.
The late 2010s marked theheight of the superhero boom with fewercomic book films reaching thebillion-dollar box office milestone.
That became common in 2018 and 2019, butSpider-Man appears to be defying thetrend.
Marlow Stern joins me now. So, why doesSpider-Man seem to consistently attracthuge audiences?
>> I think it's a younger superhero, so younger audiences gravitate toward it. Ithink it's a superhero everyone canrelate to because it's just a young kindof normal kid who's imbued with thesessuperpowers versus some of these ones that are kindof gods like the Supermans of the world.
>> Does the story keep up here because Idid read a negative review essentiallythat there'sthere's sort of too much emphasis onpaying homage to the comic book and soit doesn't really necessarily have likethe emotional depth for mass audiences,but you've seen it. Did you agree ordisagree?
>> I would disagree with that review. Ithought it was honestly one of thestrongest entries in the franchiseemotionally. And I think a good thingabout it is that there was a nice 5-yeargap in between films, whereas, you know,too many of these are being churned outtoo fast and audiences are getting tiredof that.
>> Yeah, there's no anticipation. So, howmuch you mentioned a younger Spider-Man,how much of it is the actor behind themask or in this case we've got like a
power couple uh playing two maincharacters here.
>> Listen, I think it doesn't hurt thatthe, you know, two main characters inthis film are two of the biggest moviestars in the world who recently gotmarried, who are coming off the Odysseyand on a giant global press tour forthat film. So, there's a lot ofvisibility there and I think it's onlyhelping.
>> Have audience expectations changedbecause I remember back rooms reallywowed everybody. This new up-and-comingfilmmaker, really young YouTuber,created thispretty low-budget by current standardsfilm. It just wowed people. People weregoing again and again and again. Um ordo do franchises like this still havetheir place? Or do you think audiencesare moving away from that?
>> It's interesting. I think youngeraudiences are moving away fromfranchises a little bit. I mean, we'veseen with The Mandalorian and Grogu,their recent entry in the Star Warsfranchise, that one reallydidn't take off much at the box office.
You just mentioned Supergirl,um and that one only made, gosh, openedto 37 million and it cost about 107million, and that's a conservativeestimate to produce.
So, again, I mean, I think there's stillan audience for some of these tried andtrue superheroes that have already builtin all that goodwill among audienceslike Spider-Man. Spider-Man might be thecream of the crop.

>> I mean, I would recommend everyone seeThe Odyssey. Uh with all due respect toEmily Wilson, the translator, who didnot seem to like it very much.>> not.
>> You know,I thought it was I thought she may havetaken it too literallyas a translator, [laughter] but um no,
yeah, uh The Odyssey's fantastic. UmI'm excited for this uh sort of sci-fistrange film called The End of OpryStreet, opening in mid-August, which isby Robert Mitchell, the director of ItFollows, and it stars Anne It's anotherAnne Hathaway film. She She's ineverything this year.
