Russia launches 'horrific' drone, missile strikes on Ukraine, killing 17: Officials 83%

Ukraine is calling for urgent help from the US after a deadly large-scale Russian strikes. Ukrainian officials say
Russia launched more than 70 missiles and more than 600 drones majly targeting the capital of Kev.
They say at least 17 people are dead and more than 100 are injured.
Now, President Zilinsky says Ukraine urgently needs help from the US
and Europe. ABC's Patrick Revel has the latest on that from London.
Patrick, what's happening with these Russian strikes?
>> Hi Dan. And yeah, this was a very heavy Russian attack overnight.
It came in waves.
We saw, as you say, more than 70 missiles and over 600 drones, mostly targeting Kev, but also badly hitting the southern city of Denipro.
Uh dozens of residential buildings were damaged.
There were explosions on the skyline all night.
You could see um thick smoke rising over Kev in the morning as well.
In Denipro, at least um 11 or I should say even now 12 people uh were killed.
among them at least two young children
and in particular we saw Russia launch a very large number of ballistic missiles
which are the most difficult thing for Ukraine to shoot down right now is only able really to do so uh with US-made interceptor missiles and that is why you
are seeing President Zilinski issue
again this plea for the US to help with that Diane

>> so it was a particularly large attack involving ballistic missiles, which shows you that Vladimir Putin is trying
to exploit this shortage of uh of missile of interceptor missiles that Ukraine has.
What is interesting though is that despite, you know, this very heavy attack in the images that we see recently, we've actually been talking about how the war appears to actually be shifting to be more favorable to Ukraine
than it has been in a long time because of Ukraine's very successful uh campaigns using drones recently. Uh
Ukraine is now able to hit deep behind Russian lines and has been systematically targeting supply lines, particularly in the south and east. And
that is causing Russia now real problems. We've seen in Crimea this week, for example, huge uh lines of people waiting for gasoline because of fuel shortages there.
And so there are mounting problems for Russia as it is as Ukraine seems to be gaining this edge in
drones to the point that people are talking about a new phase in the war.
But what that might mean is rather than Vladimir Putin seeking peace, he may seek to escalate.
And I think that is partly why we are seeing these ever larger attacks on Kev unable to move forward on the battlefield.
Vladimir Putin is hoping to break Ukraine uh by attacking its cities with these huge
aerial attacks. Dion >> Patrick Zalinsky says these attacks will continue if Ukraine isn't protected from missile strikes.
He says Europe needs its own anti-bballistic defense and he's asking the US for more Patriot missiles
to to supply it.
How likely is all of that to happen and what if it doesn't?
So yeah, as you say, President Zilinsky hasn't been making these appeals to the US for more Patriot missiles.
These are the interceptor missiles that pretty much the US only produces um and which are in very short supply even in the best of times, but they have become even shorter in supply because of the war in Iran.
Iran. The US has been has used a substantial amount of its own stockpile.
What we understand is that the Ukrainians are asking uh the Americans to allow them to start producing uh patriots themselves and that is re
realistic. Ukraine increasingly is developing its own defense industry uh very much. We know that they sent a
letter last week asking for that. But whether the US and President Trump will agree to it, I think is very uncertain.
