Also tonight, one suspect is dead, a child is recovering after a very scary incident at a Walmart in Nebraska, where police say somebody tried to kidnap a toddler at knife point.
Investigators are still trying to piece together what happened here, but they say officers approached the suspect outside the store.
She had had a knife.
They said drop the knife, and that is when they say she slashed this 3-year-old across the face.
At least one officer then opened fire.
Fortunately, that little boy, that 3-year-old, is expected to be okay.
Kathy Park is covering this.
She's joining us for more.
How did this happen?
Do we know any other details?
Hey there, Halley.
Yeah, this is just a troubling story.
It's an incident that happened early this morning shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time.
And according to police, that child and a caretaker were inside the store at the time when, according to authorities, the pair they were approached by this woman.
And then, according to police, there is apparently no sort of relationship between the pair, the caretaker, the child, and the stranger who essentially approached them, pulled out a large knife, and then, essentially, had the the child pointed the knife pointed at the child.
And the suspect, the woman, told the pair to to go outside.
And according to authorities, shortly after that, after they went outside, apparently there's video of this suspect, this woman, slashing this child across the face.
It didn't take long before authorities arrived on the scene.
Um and essentially, at least one officer fired their weapon and killed the suspect near the grounds of that Walmart store in Nebraska.
Still so many questions, Halley.
Right now, the suspect's identity, this woman's identity, has not yet been released.
We don't really know the relationship between this woman and the caretaker and the child.
But really, a really scary moment.
Officer-involved shooting, and one person is dead.
But the good news is, out of all of this, that that young boy, that 3-year-old, aside from that injury, we do know, according to authorities, that he is expected to recover.
Halley.
