More employers seeking critical thinking skills amid AI rise 91%

As artificial intelligence cementss its role across more US job sectors, career training experts say the technology is actually reviving the need for liberal arts skills and diminishing the need for more traditional technical skills. CBS News Money Watch reporter Megan Serula joins us. So, what have you heard from employers and experts, Megan, about the types of skills that are becoming desired and why? 
Surprisingly, this new technology is giving new shine to a liberal arts education, which is good news for me because I was a romance languages major and I was concerned that everything was going technical. 
But that's not the case. And that's because AI is very good at executing the technical tasks. 
But what it lacks is empathy and judgment and the ability to think critically, which are the kinds of skills that employers are going to be leaning on human workers to bring to the table. 
>> How do you study empathy? 
>> That's a good question. What career experts recommend is that students in college test and try a wide range of things that excite and animate them. 
If you go into college saying, "I want to learn how to code in Java," that skill could very well become obsolete by the time you earn your diploma. 
So, there's this very real fear about the value of students degrees declining before they've even earned them, which is why 
it's important to pair different disciplines. 
If you are interested in chemistry, also take an art history class so that you have fluency across disciplines. 
disciplines. and experts emphasize that experiences like travel can also help people build and develop creative problem um solving skills which corporations are going to increasingly value in the age of AI. 
>> I never thought my study abroad experience in Spain could be an a boon but here we are. 
>> Make sure it's on your resume. 
>> I will let I mean this also sounds like a higher education problem because I mean it it's going to have to adapt. 
It sounds like right now the onus is on the students to try and fortune tell what's going to be valuable five to 10 years, not even 20 years from now. 
>> Academia is notoriously slow to adapt to tech changes. 
So you're right, the onus is in large part on students. And the riskiest bet that people can make is to think that by acquiring one skill, they will be marketable or employable when the landscape is changing so quickly. 
>> So is any industry safe? 
>> No industry is insulated from AI. And to be sure, every student, every graduate needs to have a baseline fluency in the technology. 
But those students that win are going to be the ones who are the most original thinkers. 
Because if you can dream it up, then AI can build it for you.
