And President Trump claims Hamas has agreed to the next phase of a Gaza peace deal negotiated by his International Board of Peace. Senior Hamas official told our partners at the BBC it has agreed to the plan for phase disarmament, but Israel has not yet publicly commented.
CBS News senior national security correspondent Charlie Dageda is live in Aman, Jordan.
What do we know about this new phase?
Yeah, good good morning, Michael. So, pivoting away from the war in Iran that we've been discussing, surprise apparent breakthrough over the future of Gaza.
Now, details are scarce and obviously Israel has to be on board, but here's what we know. The headline here is the deal would see Hamas handing over its weapons in exchange for a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza. That surprise announcement was posted overnight by President Trump who called it an historic agreement for the complete disarmament of uh Hamas.
A monumental step forward his words lasting peace and security.
Now, if this agreement is to stick, and that is a big agreement is to stick, and that is a big if, that would be the first time that Hamas has agreed to disarm, not just Hamas, by the way, um but other armed militant groups in Gaza.
Um Hamas says that's contingent on Israeli troops withdrawing to where they were before October 7th.
So, an Israeli uh political source tells CBS News that Gaza was not discussed in that recent meeting between President Trump uh and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu when he visited earlier this week.
That same source says uh there will be no withdrawal from Israeli troops before Hamas is disarmed and the Gaza Strip is demilitarized.
So, President Trump's board of peace, which helped broker this, it's a 20point deal, uh, said it also includes Hamas filling in that vast network of tunnels.
That process alone could take as many as 300 days.
Now, we spoke to Hamas spokesman Gazi Hammad, uh, who said the consolidation and storage of weapons, he doesn't like to use the word disarm, uh, would not happen before Israel implements its commitments, and that includes the withdrawal from Gaza.
We're all also learning today that Israel launched uh new strikes in Gaza hours after President Trump announced that deal.
Just reminding uh how volatile that region is. Michael.
>> All right, Charlie Dageda in Jordan.
Thank you.
