Relaxing weapons export restrictions, strengthening sea lane defenses, and transiting the Taiwan Strait, Japan is taking a more assertive stance on defense.
China says it monitored a Japanese warship passing through the Taiwan Strait on Friday.
The waterway is highly sensitive as it separates Taiwan from mainland China.
It also marks the first time a Japanese warship has transited the Strait since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi took office.

The warship went on to join a joint US-Philippines military drill after transiting the Taiwan Strait.

Representative Pat Harrigan posted on X that Japan has made one of the most consequential defense policy shifts since the end of World War II.
He added that the ripple effects across the Pacific will be significant.
Harrigan also noted that Japan is entering the global arms market at a time when China is testing every boundary it can find.
Australia is jumping at the opportunity of Japan easing arms export restrictions.

Japan has decided to release more oil from its strategic reserves for a second time to ensure a stable supply.
Japan imports 95% of its oil from the Middle East with most shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
