Growing up in the South Plains, I've always um had an interest in understanding how things work. I've always have been a huge fan of space.
>> A little boy stargazing in Loveland is now a grown man leading the charge into outer space. Ronnie Bakus is a Levand High School and SPC alumnist who's now the chief engineer of the Orion spacecraft and Aremis 2 mission.
I will say for me personally, it's just very satisfying to see this come to fruition.
We have been working for quite a while in the development of this spacecraft system.
The entire point of this is to support human exploration.
>> He started working on the thermal protection systems for Orion structures more than 10 years ago.
It's a key aspect of protecting the ship and the crew as they pass through the Earth's atmosphere.
Yeah, there's been a a long development in in the heat shield and as we continue to do the flight tests, we take the learning from each uh previous test and apply that to the next uh evolution of the heat shield system.
The heat shield faced criticism though after Artemis 1's, the same one as Artemis 2's, sustained damage upon re-entry, but Becca says he and his team performed an extensive amount of testing to prepare for this historic moment.
>> That helped inform our analytical models to make the the appropriate updates to ensure that we are accounting for all of the behavior of the heat shield performance and uh and flying in a trajectory that is uh uh within the safe limits.
That re-entry trajectory is a new one developed a few years ago in hopes of mitigating some of the previous issues.
>> So, we've designed a trajectory that is a little bit shorter downrange that will better manage that that heat load um and make sure we are protecting all the thermal margins uh that we need to.
>> If all goes to plan, the Orion spacecraft will splash down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego. Th
>> this has been a really uh exciting but intense time for this entire mission.
I don't think I've really had a chance to soak it in yet, and I don't think I'll really relax until I see that the crew has got their boots on safely on the deck of the ship.
>> The Aremis 2 mission is another giant leap for mankind, and an even bigger one for West Texas as Beckas' childhood dreams blast off. Houston,
>> uh, yeah, very, very fond memories of my time growing up up in West Texas. It is
very nice to hear that the the everyone is kind of cheering on our crew and and the mission that we have uh have ongoing.
