The stomach parasite linked to lettuce 
has now been connected to more than 4,000 cycllosporasis cases across 41 states. 
Secretary of Health and Human Services said yesterday the outbreak is under control and is pushing back against criticism that cuts led to weak spots in regulation. 
>> We did cuts in the food net program, but they were for redundant surveillance. 
But Joel Barrett, who was the head of the CDC cycllospora surveillance lab before he resigned in September, told CBS News correspondent Jared Hill yesterday he feels differently. 
>> My team was reduced from 11 to three people. 
I think the loss of staff on the cycllospora laboratory team did likely delay the response. 
>> Julie Swan joins us now. She's the head of the Fitz Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering at North Carolina State University. 
Thank you for being here. A lot of people don't even really know what they can eat right now. 
What can you tell folks? 
>> Well, what we know is that lettuce has been identified as one of the products that's been contaminated. 
And specifically, they've traced it back through the the supply chain. And so, it's bagged lettucees of certain types. 
There's a list of those that are recalled. 
So, you you need to look at that. and also be careful about uh lettuce that was cut previously in uh in the previous weeks. 
But I think moving forward, of course, everything in the supply chain and and the distribution centers and processing centers will be cleaned. 
And so I would anticipate we'll start to see cases come down after the incubation period is done. 
>> What has made this so difficult to track and trace and get to the bottom line for the American public? 
Well, I I think there are a couple of things that make it difficult. 
One is that when you're talking about processed lettuce, you can have something that comes in contaminated from the farm into the processing center and it can actually contaminate the equipment which then leads to uh lettuce getting co-mingled and as it goes out into bags or into the the fast food places that can be contaminated. 
So, that's one factor. 
I do think that there are two other factors contributing to the size of this particular outbreak in the length of time. 
And one is that our surveillance of this parasite is not quite as good as we probably want it to be. 
And then a second factor is that a lot of the tracing and interviews are still being done manually both with the patients and with the supply chain tracking. 
And so is that something where the federal government needs to look at how to make that more efficient or is that a symptom of the incubation period for the parasite? 
>> We certainly can look at making that more efficient and there's some some uh laws or regulations that are coming down the line regarding food tracing. 
In addition to that, we need to be investing more in our public health infrastructure within states and those grants can come from federal government or from states. 
But as we move from manual interviewing of patients who have been sick to more digital or fast access methods that can also shorten the time period uh to identify the contaminated products and then ultimately reduce the size of future outbreaks. 
>> I am out of time but do you ever buy bagged lettuce? 
>> I do. I haven't bought it in the last couple of weeks but I do buy bagged lettuce and I also buy lettuce from my local farmers.
