Well, new this morning, rescuers in Laos say they've found five of seven missing miners alive in a flooded cave.
We've been missing for more than a week.
Flash flooding blocked the cave's exit, leaving them trapped inside.
We've got CBS News foreign correspondent Remy Asencio following all all of these breaking details live from London.
Remy, what more can you tell us?
Uh, yeah, Michael. Uh, looking at this, I mean, this is a feat.
People are saying it is a miracle. uh 8 days underground, no way out, uh water flooding them all in.
And that breakthrough happened in just the past few hours at about 4:30 p.m. local time in Lao.
And it was back on May 19th that those seven villagers walked into that cave there.
Uh this is in the remote mountains of central Lao.
They were potentially hunting for gold and and wildlife.
But then rains came in, flash floods tore down the mountain sides and then a landslide sealed them into that cave system.
In that time about a hundred rescuers raced to the site uh made of Lao soldiers uh local villagers along with a group of foreign specialists who knew how to handle this.
And one of them uh was Miko Pasi.
He's a Thai based Finnish diver and he helped in another cave rescue.
We all might remember this was back in 2018 in Thailand of a youth soccer team, 12 of them in that instance.
And our own Matt Gutman spoke with him earlier about these rescuers, what these rescuers were up against.
Take a listen.
So 60 cm is about this big. So you're squeezing your body plus an oxygen tank or an air tank through something that's basically this wide.
If there's a body, somebody in front of you, you're stuck and uh there's no way to turn around until you hit the next chamber, which can be 100 meter forward.
Do you still have hope for these miners?
They have the food even and some water with them.
So, of course, I do hope and believe.
Yeah. And today, that hope just now was rewarded.
Uh a divers's headlamp pierced through the darkness there deep inside that cave.
And that is where they found those five people alive uh huddled on a rock and surrounded by black water around them.
But the mission isn't over, Michael.
That's because two people still are missing and so the search for them goes on.
All right, hoping for the best there.
Remy Asencio, thank
