Today, a delegation led by Steve Wickoff and Jared Kushner will be back in Islamabad for a second round of peace talks with Iran.
>> The negotiations come as the US Navy maintains its blockade of the Straight of Hormuz, which the Pentagon says will continue as long as it takes.
>> Matteline Rivera joins us live from Washington with more.
Madlin, good morning.
>> Good morning. The White House says it's seen some progress from Iran in the last couple of days despite fractures among Iran's negotiating team.
A claim that Iran has denied.
The US says it was the Iranians who made the request for these talks after a round of negotiations between US and Iranian officials ended without a deal two weeks ago.
The Iranians uh reached out as the president called on them to do uh and asked for this in-person conversation.
President Trump has made his red lines throughout this entire process very clear.
He was flexible in extending the ceasefire and so uh Stephen Jared will be off to hear what they have to say.
>> The president telling writers they're making an offer and will have to see.
He said during a phone interview when asked who the US was negotiating with, Trump said, "I don't want to say that, but we're dealing with the people that are in charge now."
An Iranian delegation led by the regime's foreign minister arrived in Islamabad yesterday, but Iranian state media says Iran officials are not meeting with the Americans this weekend.
They say Iran's foreign minister will be discussing the Pakistani side of Iran's negotiations to end the war.
Ahead of the talks, the US blockade of Iran remains in place. US forces have forced at least 34 vessels, mostly oil tankers, to turn around or remain in Iranian ports.
Defense Secretary Pete Hexth warning the US military is poised to resume fighting if President Trump gives the green light.
The president though says he is in no rush to make a deal and that Vice President JD Vance is on standby to head to Pakistan if they think his presence is necessary for progress.
Charlie Rachel and Griff.
>> Thank you, Maline. Thanks, Maddie. You know, while obviously there's a lot of back and forth about um whether or not Iran wants the negotiations or Washington wants the negotiations, the the thing that I think that is most important about all of it is the the pressure on Iran right now is way more than the pressure is on the United States. The blockade is punishing them a thousand times worse than it is punishing the United States.
So that kind of makes me think that at the very least uh Iran is eager to find a way around all of this.
>> Yeah. You know, some we often talk about how the regime doesn't really care about its people and so it's really hurting the people. Maybe not even so much the regime more importantly. There's been a lot of discussion about
>> who is there,
>> right? Um the Washington Post saying that officials who are hoping for a quick end to the war say that Vance um
who is a key the and take Vance is a key asset to the delegation and that his presence would be missed.
Um they say that the vice president made had deep concerns about the war that he made those known um and that you know he's more keen on limiting and finding an offramp and some concern that Kushner and Witoff are including um the interest and objectives of Israel in their negotiations which might um end up extending extending the war perhaps.
So, we don't know if that's true or not, but that's what's reported in the Washington Post.
And it's kind of interesting who goes, who doesn't.
Um, it could it could be for, you know, just national prestige.
Don't send vice president if the Mullas are going to, you know, do what they did last time and and and walk away without a deal.
So, or not show up.
