Officials are warning of a potential outbreak of the new world screworm after the department of agriculture confirmed
five cases in the US so far. It comes after the USDA confirmed the first case in more than half a century last week.
The flesheating parasite had previously been eradicated in the US. The agency is now planning to spend about $750 million to build a facility in Texas that will produce sterile screw worms in hopes of pushing this pest out of the country.
The facility will produce about 300 million insects weekly, but it won't be operational until next year at the earliest.
The screw worm poses little risk to humans, but officials say it can be deadly for livestock and pets.
