Secretary of State Marco Rubio accusing the Iranian regime of committing terrorist acts in the state of Hormuz.
Rubio made the comments after meeting with the foreign minister of New Zealand in Washington today.
>> It's a big problem for the world. I mean, this is a regime that doesn't believe in laws, rules, or anything like that. It's a state sponsor of terrorism.
So, it's not surprising that they're now conducting terrorist activity against commercial vessels.
>> The State Department today also warning that Iran and its proxies may target universities in the Middle East.
The US embassy in Egypt is advising Americans to closely monitor the news for regional developments and exercised caution as the conflict intensifies.
The embassy says extremists have expressed interest in carrying out attacks in the region.
Other potential targets include religious and tourist sites.
Congress is out of Washington until April 14th, but calls are growing for lawmakers to return early.
Some Democrats say the situation in the Middle East demands immediate action.
Well, Republicans are defending the administration's posture toward Iran.
NTD's Chris Bob reports.
>> I don't think we're talking about ending a civilization. The issue at hand is it is their energy infrastructure.
>> While Congress is out of session, lawmakers are weighing in from afar as tensions escalate in the Middle East.
The White House says Iran has until 8:00 p.m. Eastern to make a deal with the United States.
Republicans say any potential action against Iran is focused on cutting off the regime's funding, pointing in part to China's role in purchasing Iranian oil.
New York Republican Congressman Mike Lawler says that revenue is central to Iran's activity. 90% of Iran's oil is purchased by who? China. China is the biggest purchaser of Iranian petroleum.
That is what has financed their entire illicit activity over these past many decades.
So the president is putting on the table taking action against their uh energy facilities, against their infrastructure because that will the regime. Uh is it something we want to do? No, of course not. But we want this regime to finally negotiate in good faith.
>> In the Senate, Democrats including Tim Kaine, Elizabeth Warren, and Amy Clolobachar are calling for Congress to return to Washington. In a joint statement, House Democratic leaders criticize US action in Iran and say the House must quote come back into session immediately in order to end the war.
Reports out of Iran show crowds forming human chains around infrastructure, including bridges and energy facilities.
Republican Senator Rick Scott reacting on X. Quote, "The Iranian regime is so evil that they're forcing women and children to be human shields.
children to be human shields. It's gut-wrenching. With Congress out until April 14th, any formal legislative response remains on hold for now.
