Salem's new playground at Riverfront Park prepares to make its debut 16%

One of Salem's most popular playgrounds is set to reopen in early September.
The 28-year-old playground at Riverfront Park near downtown is being fully replaced and redesigned after closing for construction in April.
The playground area will be expanded, and a popular multi-use path next to the playground will be rerouted to reduce user conflicts between the two features.
Riverfront Park is among 24 city parks getting new playgrounds, sport facilities and other amenities through the $300 million infrastructure bond passed by voters in 2022.
City staff said they reached out to families who need inclusive options and based design decisions on their feedback.
Features include:
A quieter, low-sensory zone called the eagle’s nest.
An all-inclusive accessible spinner.
A music station.
Fencing around the entire playground for families that need fully-enclosed play space.
Rolling bars on one of the slides and specialized synthetic grass that safely reduces static electricity, helping prevent interference with devices like cochlear implants.
City officials said multiple seating options will be provided throughout the playground for caregivers, along with attractive landscaping and additional shade trees planted around the play area to create a welcoming and comfortable environment.
The playground’s theme centers on wildlife and nature, including a climbing structure called the Beaver Dam and a rock scramble.
City officials said they worked with local companies, which resulted in cost savings.
They sourced much of the new commercial-grade playground equipment from a Salem vendor, Park N Play Northwest, which offered a discount of more than $46,500 as a special gift to the community.
The general contractor, Salem-based Dalke Construction, gave a bid of $2.4 million, about $600,000 less than the city’s final $3 million construction cost estimate.
The total playground project cost, including design, project management and construction on the new park path, is expected to be about $2.5 million.
It is funded through park system development charges, 2022 Safety and Livability Bond and a $770,000 grant from the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, awarded in 2024.
City officials said a soft opening of the playground is expected to take place in early September with a bigger, grand opening happening shortly thereafter.
