Drivers in western Wayne County should brace for a big change on I-94 this weekend.
MDOT’s Restore I-94 project is moving into its next phase, shifting eastbound I-94 traffic across the median and into shared westbound lanes — with a barrier wall separating directions.
The construction spans roughly 13 miles of freeway across five project segments in six Wayne County cities, including major reconstruction and bridge work.
Depending on the weather, the new traffic pattern is expected to begin Saturday, Aug. 1 and remain in place through mid-2027, as crews rebuild road and bridge infrastructure along eastbound I-94 from east of I-275 to west of US-12/Michigan Avenue.
What happens Saturday (6 a.m. – 9 p.m.)
Eastbound I-94 east of I-275 will be shifted into shared westbound lanes Saturday morning.
MDOT expects it will take much of the day to reopen ramps because crews must add pavement markings and other roadway changes.
Drivers should plan extra time — and be ready to detour during temporary ramp closures.
Headed to Metro Airport?
Use this route
During the traffic switch, MDOT says airport traffic should use I-275 to Eureka Road to access DTW.
Ramps that will stay closed through mid-2027
Once the traffic shift is complete, MDOT says these ramps will remain closed long-term:
SB Wayne Rd ramp to EB I-94
Detour: WB I-94 → Haggerty Rd → EB I-94
SB Merriman Rd ramp to EB I-94
Detour: WB I-94 → Vining Rd → EB I-94
EB I-94 ramp to Ecorse Rd
Detour: EB I-94 → SB US-24 (Telegraph) → Ecorse Rd
Another closure: Beech Daly at I-94
MDOT also says Beech Daly Road will be closed at I-94 for bridge demolition:
5 a.m.
Monday, Aug. 3 – 5 a.m.
Monday, Aug.
10
Detour: Use Ecorse or Van Born roads to US-24/Telegraph, or other local routes.
MDOT is reminding drivers to slow down in construction areas.
Per state law, speeding in a Michigan interstate construction work zone means double fines, steeper license point penalties, and if a crash happens potentially serious felony charges.
More details are posted on Restore94.com and construction locations at Michigan.gov/drive.
