DETROIT  Lonn Hartman is alert, getting stronger every day, and communicating with those closest to him as investigators continue working to determine how the Detroit mentor suffered severe injuries at the Blissfest Music Festival.
Hartman was found with serious lacerations to his neck during the festival in northern Michigan on July 12.
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says it remains undetermined whether those injuries were self-inflicted or the result of an altercation.
Hartman’s longtime friend, Terace Garnier, says she has spoken with him since the incident and believes his injuries were not self-inflicted.
“He loved his life,” Garnier said.
“He works with kids.
He mentors underprivileged kids in Detroit.
He just got a new place, and he was excited about it.
He also just got his degree, so he had all these good things going for him.
Why would he do this to himself?”
Garnier says Hartman has told her what he says happened, but she declined to share those details.
When asked whether those conversations convinced her Hartman’s injuries were not self-inflicted, Garnier responded, “Oh, absolutely.”
The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation remains an active priority.
Investigators say they are following leads, conducting interviews, and processing evidence.
Several items have been submitted to the Michigan State Police Crime Laboratory for forensic testing.
Investigators are asking anyone with information to contact the dedicated tip line by emailing blissfestinvestigation@emmetcounty.org or calling 231-348-0605.
Blissfest organizers also released a statement on social media, saying they were “deeply saddened” by what they described as a serious medical incident at the festival campground.
Organizers confirmed Hartman was a registered artist at the festival.
Hartman works as a professional mentor with Friends of the Children–Detroit.
Executive Director Derschaun Brown says Hartman consistently goes above and beyond for the children he serves.
“Just always going above and beyond with everything,” Brown said.
Brown says she hopes Hartman makes a full recovery.
“Absolutely, cannot wait to have him back.
When you have such a critical piece of your team not here, you feel it,” Brown said.
A GoFundMe has been created to help cover Hartman’s medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, and legal fees related to the investigation.
