It’s often described as if it were a giant storm, a heat wave or a switch that controls the atmosphere.

Here are five things El Niño isn’t — and what it actually is.
1.
El Niño is not a storm
This is probably the biggest misconception.
El Niño isn’t a hurricane, tropical storm, atmospheric river or winter storm moving across the Pacific Ocean.
It doesn’t have an eye, rain bands or a path that meteorologists can track.
Instead, El Niño is a naturally occurring phenomenon that can trigger global weather patterns, but it develops gradually over months.
It begins when a large area of the tropical Pacific Ocean becomes warmer than average.
Those warmer waters, essentially a massive transfer of heat energy in the world’s largest ocean, can change the atmosphere above them, altering wind patterns that then can influence weather thousands of miles away.
Think of El Niño less like a thunderstorm and more like adjusting the thermostat in one room of a house.
That one change can influence the environmental conditions throughout the entire house.

El Niño is not one single weather event
Houston’s January freeze was a weather event.
Hurricane Beryl was a weather event.
A line of severe thunderstorms is a weather event.
El Niño is none of those.
It's part of a cycle called the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or ENSO.
The oscillation refers to how the sea-surface temperatures in the equatorial waters of the eastern Pacific can become warmer than normal (El Niño) or become cooler than normal, an event commonly known as a La Niña.
ENSO can also enter a "neutral" phase, when water temperatures stay close to their long-term average levels, neither warmer or cooler than normal.
El Niño typically peaks during late fall or winter and gradually weakens afterward.
During that time, it influences the odds of many weather events happening, not just one.

This summer, for example, El Niño is increasing upper-level wind shear across much of the tropical Atlantic, making it harder for hurricanes to organize.
That influence plays out over an entire season, not on a single day.

El Niño is not limited to one place
Although El Niño begins over the equatorial Pacific Ocean, it doesn’t stay there.
Changes in ocean temperatures alter tropical rainfall patterns, which then reshape atmospheric circulation around the globe.
Those changes can influence weather across North and South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
For Houston, one of El Niño’s most immediate effects is changing the odds of Atlantic hurricane activity.
About 600 miles north of Lima, in the Peruvian city of Piura, El Niño often brings an increased risk of flooding.
Across the Pacific in Brisbane, on Australia’s east coast, it can raise the risk of drought and bush fires.
The same climate pattern can produce very different outcomes depending on where you live.
El Niño is the backdrop against which weather unfolds.

El Niño does not guarantee any particular forecast
One of the easiest mistakes is assuming El Niño automatically means:
* A quiet hurricane season
* A rainy Texas winter
* Cooler temperatures
* Or even snow in Houston.
That’s not how it works.
El Niño changes the probabilities, not the outcome.
NOAA and climate researchers emphasize that El Niño tilts the odds toward certain weather patterns, but other atmospheric influences remain important.
That’s why Texas can still experience tropical systems during El Niño years, even if hurricanes become less common across the Atlantic overall.
It’s also why two strong El Niño events can produce noticeably different winters across Texas.
As hurricane researcher Phil Klotzbach recently told the Houston Chronicle, El Niño reduces hurricane odds — but it doesn’t reduce them to zero.
5.
El Niño is not something humans can stop — or create
Unlike greenhouse gas emissions, El Niño isn’t caused by people.
It’s a naturally occurring part of Earth’s atmospheric activity that has been happening for thousands — likely millions — of years.
Scientists can observe it, monitor it and increasingly predict how it will evolve, but they can’t turn it on, shut it off or weaken it.
Researchers continue to investigate how ongoing climate change might influence future El Niño events, but the relationship remains an active area of study.
However, scientists have much more confidence that global warming can alter the effects of El Niño — more than they do in predicting how often or how strongly El Niño itself will occur.
