I've never been a fan of vacuuming.
It's one of those chores that's satisfying once it's done - but that doesn't make getting started any easier.
Part of the problem was the vacuum itself.
The one I'd been using for years barely picked anything up and had taken plenty of knocks from being dragged around corners and into furniture.
On top of that, the cable never felt long enough, and I was constantly tugging it from the socket by accident.
So when my old corded cleaner finally refused to switch on, it felt like the right time for an upgrade to a cordless vacuum.
Cordless seemed like the obvious choice for me.
Not having to switch plugs mid-job was a big draw and I liked the idea of a model that could convert into a handheld for getting into tighter spaces, like under sofa cushions.
I'd also heard great things about Shark vacuums from friends and colleagues, so I felt confident I was making a good choice with the Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean and Empty.
Other reviewers at the Daily Mail have already given glowing reviews of the Shark Stratos, Shark Anti Hair Wrap, Shark PowerPro Cordless and even the Shark PowerDetect UV Reveal - the latest robot vacuum from the brand.
The PowerDetect range stood out in particular, as it has smart sensors that detect hidden dirt, edges and different floor types - ideal for my flat, which has a mix of hardwood flooring and carpet.
It's one of Shark's more expensive vacuums but after trying it, I don't think I'll ever go back to corded.

After testing it across every room in my flat, this is one of the most effective cordless vacuums I’ve used - though its price and noisy self-empty feature may not suit everyone.
The design and powerful suction of the Shark PowerDetect Speed Clean immediately won me over.
All of the attachments are intuitive to use and easy to switch between.
There are also some thoughtful design touches throughout, particularly when it comes to visibility on hard floors.
I appreciated the clear display on the handle, which made it easy to keep track of the remaining battery life.
The handheld function came in handy for reaching cobwebs and dust that gather in ceiling corners - areas that are often tricky to clean with a full-sized vacuum.
The self-empty cleaning is also a total game-changer, especially for those of us with allergies, or if you just hate emptying your cordless vacuum.
And at just 3.5kg, it's one of the lightest vacuums with this level of suction power.
While the vacuum itself isn't overly loud during normal use, the self-emptying cycle is a different story.
The base station emits a loud, high-pitched suction noise for around 10-15 seconds as it transfers the dirt.
Thankfully, there is a quiet mode, which I tend to use when cleaning in the evenings or early on weekend mornings.

How we test
I tested the vacuum over a week of daily cleaning, using every attachment on hardwood floors, carpets, tiles and upholstery.
I put it up against everyday dirt and grime, as well as some larger spilt food tests.
As a result, my flat got one of the most thorough cleans it's ever had, with particular focus on the wooden floors, tiles, carpets and rugs.
I also paid close attention to noise levels.

First impressions
When this vacuum first arrived, I'll admit I was slightly overwhelmed by the size of the box, not to mention the number of attachments and the dock.
Inside the box, you get the handheld unit of the Shark PowerDetect, the main floorhead, a flex wand, a charging post and the dock base.
Setup was simple, though - I just clicked the charging post into the dock and assembled the vacuum itself, which only took a few minutes.
I left it to charge overnight before testing it, to make sure it was running at full capacity.

The attachments are straightforward to use and clip in easily without any fuss.
While I don't have pets, I do have very long, thick hair, which tends to wreak havoc on vacuums.
Thankfully, the anti-tangle technology here is a real standout, preventing hair from clogging up the brush roll.
Design
Space is already limited in my flat, so I was initially concerned about where it would live.
However, the dock fits neatly in my hallway and, although it's fairly substantial, it looks tidy and stays upright - unlike my old vacuum, which had a habit of toppling over.
Design-wise, it's very practical.
I love the fact that the attachments can be stored neatly on the back of the dock, which keeps everything organised and close to hand.
The self-emptying dock is a standout feature, too.
It means fewer trips to the bin and less dust exposure - a big plus for my allergies.
The ability to convert it into a handheld vacuum is another winning feature.
I found it especially useful for quick clean-ups, such as tackling dust under the bed.

Performance
The suction is powerful and consistent, and the pet tool, in particular, is excellent for lifting hair from carpets.
Even on carpets that looked clean, the canister filled up quickly with dust and hair, despite vacuuming daily.
It really made me question how little my previous cleaner had been picking up.
The vacuum's smart sensors that detect hidden dirt, edges and different floor types were also very useful and removed the need to toggle between settings.
The Flexology wand allows you to bend the vacuum under furniture without having to move it out of the way
It has a runtime of one hour on standard mode when fully charged, which was more than enough for my small flat, but may not be enough for a large house.
That said, it's not without its flaws - especially given the price.
It can struggle with smaller debris on hard floors - a surprising issue at this price point.
I also found that while hair is ok, occasionally threads can get caught around the brush roll, which then need to be removed manually.
Value for money
At nearly £500 full price, the Shark PowerDetect with auto empty is definitely a hefty investment.
However, it really is a very good vacuum with plenty of smart features.
What's more, the five-year guarantee gives peace of mind that you will not face expensive, out-of-pocket repair costs or premature replacements.
The same model without the dock is currently on sale for £249, which may be a better value for some users.
