One person is dead and another injured after a shooting on an East Oakland school campus on Friday morning.
Oakland Police said that just before 9 a.m., they responded to shots fired at the Parker Community Resource Center on Ney Avenue, where Oakland Unified School District operates an adult education program.
On the scene, officers located two victims in their 20s with gunshot wounds.
According to Police Chief James Beere, officers attempted to administer lifesaving support before one of the victims was pronounced dead.
The other victim was transferred to a local hospital and is in stable condition.
“This is a very tragic incident; it’s heartbreaking,” Beere said at a news conference on Friday afternoon.
He said police are investigating the incident and have multiple leads on suspects.
According to Beere, the shooting was not a random act.
“This was a very intentional crime,” he said, adding that because it is an active investigation, he could not discuss the motive.
OUSD spokesperson John Sasaki said that immediately after the shooting, the district locked down the campus, securing people in classrooms and the site’s office.
He said he believes about 20 people, including students, were at the resource center during the incident.
OUSD operates its Adult and Career Education program on the campus, which offers high school graduation and equivalency courses, career technical education and other programs for adults.
The shooting comes after multiple violent events on Oakland school campuses in recent years, including a shooting at Skyline High School last fall, which led to a large student walkout over safety concerns.
“Every day we are focused on improving the safety of our campuses – whether it’s an elementary school, middle school, high school, adult school,” Sasaki said Friday.
“We’re gonna look at everything we can here to make sure that we’re doing what we can to keep guns, weapons of any kind, off our campuses.”
