Former State Senate President Troy Jackson has officially clinched the Democratic nomination for the US Senate race, and will face Sen.
Susan Collins in November.
The vote took place at Saturday’s Special Nominating Convention in Bangor.
The win was almost a foregone conclusion after Jackson won the vast majority of delegates in county meetings and most of his rivals for the Democratic U.S.
Senate nomination dropped out of the race.
In his acceptance speech, Jackson spoke about his own experience organizing alongside other loggers in Maine, and how it led to politics.
“I went into the woods right after high school, all of us did, I was no different, I’m nothing special, we worked long days, long weeks, with no health insurance and no benefits, same as today.
And then we watched our jobs disappear or have depressed wages…working people being treated like they were disposable.
I didn’t get involved in politics because I wanted a title.
I got involved because people I worked beside were getting screwed and no one in power seemed to care about that.”
Jackson also called out Sen.
Susan Collins for her long history of harmful votes in the Senate.
“For nearly 30 years Collins has told Maine she is concerned…while she gutted our health care…while she cut taxes for corporations and the wealthy…when she confirmed justices who overturned Roe v Wade…and when she gave ICE billions to terrorize our neighbors and murder people on the streets with no accountability…
Power is never just given to working people.
We have to band together and take it.
And when the people in power refuse to listen, you have to organize.
You have to stand together in solidarity, together, and you have to make them listen.
And that’s how we took on the companies exploiting Maine loggers, and that’s how we’re going to take on Susan Collins.”
Biotech CEO Saundra Pelletier of Caribou was Jackson’s only remaining declared challenger heading into today’s vote.
“I know how to fight,” Pelletier said in her remarks.
“Susan Collins is a worthy opponent.
But she’s weak now…we have a chance to stop her.”
The Convention brought together 599 delegates, including 500 county delegates and 99 members of the State Committee.
