ICE detention reported at Lower Manhattan ER as immigration enforcement surges in NYC 58%

An ICE vehicle pulled into New York Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital Sunday after an eyewitness said she saw a man detained in the ER.
At around 1:50 p.m. on Aug. 2, a young woman was visiting her friend in the emergency room at the hospital, located at 83 Gold St., when she told amNewYork that she saw masked ICE agent s with the detained man.
The witness, who asked not to be identified, said that when she attempted to speak with the man and take photographs, ICE agents intervened and demanded that she delete her images.
“I was trying to get his name and contact information, and they told me he is quarantined.
They started recording and taking photos of me.
They said they were going to press charges,” the witness said.
“Nobody in there is acting like anything is even happening.”
Meanwhile, security guards for the hospital became strangely irritated with members of the media standing on the sidewalk outside, even going as far as to call 911.
However, when police arrived, they explained to staff that they could not legally move the journalists.
Later that afternoon two vehicles that immigration rights activists believe to be DHS vehicles sped away from the hospital, chased by activists who blew whistles and screamed, “These are ICE vehicles!”
while pointing.
Although they sped away without incident, they continued to loop around the hospital throughout the afternoon.
ICE agents, in the meantime, had parked one of their vehicles in the ambulance bay at the hospital, where protestors punched and kicked it.
It is believed this was a distraction as agents removed the man from another exit, put him in a different vehicle as both vehicles drove away.
The incident follows a string of ICE sitings throughout the city and Long Island on Thursday and Friday, after President Donald Trump’s border czar Tom Homan threatened to ramp up enforcement in the metro area.
Videos quickly made the rounds on social media of ICE agents on New York City streets — wearing body armor and masks, in violation of state law — stopping people targeted for detention, and confronting those recording and/or protesting their presence.
On July 30, masked agents were seen in Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn in larger groups than had previously been reported.
Maked ICE agents were seen questioning a family in a minivan, though they were not reported to have been detained.
ICE was also spotted in East Elmhurst and Inwood.
On Seaman and Isham Avenues in the latter neighborhood, a disturbing encounter was caught on camera that appeared to show a masked federal agent approaching a woman who was filming them on her cellphone while holding what appeared to be a canister of military-grade pepper spray.
Politicians and immigrant rights groups were outraged at the federal surge.
The New York Immigration Coalition also issued an alert warning of increased immigration enforcement activity, writing: “We expect this trend to continue and potentially increase.”
The reported uptick in enforcement comes as fears mount over the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian New Yorkers and follows Homan’s pledge to surge ICE agents into New York.
A spokesperson for NYC ICE Watch, an organization that monitors ICE activity in the city, said they believe this is the beginning of Homan’s threats becoming a reality.
“We have heard Tom Homan’s threats.
We have also heard the rumors.
Thursday seemed to be the day that the ICE abductions really began to increase.
So, yes, this is definitely an increase in ICE activity,” the spokesperson said.
“They have been pepper-spraying neighbors who have borne witness to their kidnappings, and as it seems that they are increasing their kidnappings in the city, they will only continue to be more violent unless they are stopped.”
