Google has doubled down on its office footprint in Sunnyvale by leasing two properties, signaling a commitment to reverse a trend of shedding office space in the post-pandemic era.
The tech giant confirmed it has signed lease renewals for Moffett Place on Borregas Avenue and Moffett Gateway on Crossman Avenue in Sunnyvale.
Combined, the leases total roughly 2.1 million square feet of office space.
Google is leasing five of six buildings at Moffett Place, occupying 1.5 million square feet, according to the Silicon Valley Business Journal , which first reported the deal.
That is roughly the same amount of office space as the Googleplex at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View.
Google is also leasing two seven-story buildings at Moffett Gateway, totaling about 600,000 square feet, according to the Business Journal.
Jay Paul Co., a real estate firm, owns and developed the buildings.
The firm did not immediately respond to an inquiry about the lease terms.
A Google spokesperson also declined to provide information about it.
Google has had a presence in Sunnyvale for the past 15 years, with its headquarters based in Mountain View.
“We’ve been proud to call the Bay Area home for more than 20 years and we remain committed to creating workspaces that help Googlers do their best work,” a Google spokesperson said.
What’s happening in Mountain View?
In contrast to Sunnyvale, Google has rolled back some of its office and housing commitments in Mountain View.
Two years ago, Google terminated plans for a mega-office complex in North Bayshore.
Dubbed “Google Landings,” the project would have nearly tripled the existing office space on the property with an 800,000 square foot office development, near U.S.
Highway 101 between Rengstorff Avenue and Permanente Creek.
At the time, Google said it was “taking a measured approach” to its real estate investments, looking to ensure that it “matched the current and future needs of our workforce, business and communities.”
Before abandoning the project, Google chopped down more than 800 trees on the site.
Since then, the tech behemoth has agreed to pay Mountain View between $533,500 and $703,000 to plant hundreds of new trees throughout the city.
Google has also pulled back on plans to build housing in Mountain View.
Four years ago, Google and Lendlease, an Australian-based real estate developer, proposed to build nearly 2,000 new homes at Middlefield Park, a 40-acre site in the East Whisman area.
Then in 2024, Google announced it was parting ways with Lendlease while maintaining it was committed to delivering housing in the Bay Area.
A year later, Google said it was exploring the sale of the Middlefield Park property.
At the time, Google said it was considering potential buyers with expertise and resources to build the homes at Middlefield Park.
The Google spokesperson declined to provide updates about the current status of the Google Landings and Middlefield Park properties.
Google’s land holdings also include a massive office park in North Bayshore, more than three times the size of the Middlefield Park property.
The area is slated to become a mixed-use neighborhood with plans for 7,000 new homes, 3 million square feet of office space, restaurants and retail and 26 acres of parks and open space that is expected to be built over the next 30 years.
The company spokesperson said Google is still working with the city and developers on the project.
