Dana was first introduced to Documenters through her mother, Sonja Stuckey, a longtime passionate advocate for the program.
Dana resisted joining because she didn’t consider herself creative enough to write.
Eventually, the opportunity to earn extra income got her through the door, but it’s the purpose of the program that keeps her around.
Dana enjoyed her first assignment and applied for more.
“They kept giving me assignments to some my favorite places, and it just worked out from there,” Dana said.
Highland Park City Council is her favorite public meeting to cover because she appreciates that residents are empowered to make themselves heard.
Growing up on Detroit’s westside shaped Dana’s understanding of what Detroiters want and need.
As a healthcare caseworker, she works with high-risk populations and sees firsthand how functional literacy crisis and limited access to civic information can keep people from participating in local government.
“Any time I do reporting, it’s with the intention of making information accessible to people that they might not otherwise know.”
