Until the last two weeks, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had mostly succeeded in his goal of keeping immigration enforcement operations out of the headlines.
Gone were the publicized surges in blue cities and the flashy montages.
But a pair of recent shootings have once again highlighted the risks and consequences of the administration’s mass deportation campaign.
What an absolute mess.
This gratuitous nonsense from the guy who was going to turn down the temperature.
Just finished reading this piece from CNN about what happened earlier this year in Minneapolis:
18 Days in Minnesota: The false claims, chaos and coverups behind the Trump administration’s killing of two American citizens
And this is why I am no longer a Republican.
This sort of ugliness is so destructive to our nation it's not funny.
The same thing happened in Allentown PA back in the early 90's.
The population was aging, and their children weren't staying in town.
The city changed from its old white ethnic roots to a far more vibrant and interesting city mainly populated by Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, and Central Americans.
While our town is not wealthy, our downtown remained viable and our schools full.
But the ICE raids have changed all of that.
People are scared to death and staying away from the businesses in town - afraid ICE is targeting businesses (and it seems ot be, as if the businesses are easy marks to find immigrants).
There is no good coming from the ICE raids.
The major victory has been achieved - stopping the massive flows into the US.
There is no benefit in removing lots of hard working people.
Then there's the tyranny of mathematics.
Assuming the rate of 10,000 per week could be maintained, that means about 500,000 people taken into custody in a year.
Given that there are, on the low side, about 10 million undocumented immigrants in country.
The problem is solved in around 20 years assuming no more arrivals and we have sufficient warehouses to store people until they can be deported to somewhere.
Of course, some could die while in custody, which solves some of that.
And then there is the problem of feeding them and keeping them healthy enough that they don't trigger another pandemic.
Etc, etc, etc.
This whole business in insane.
The Trump you are describing is the one I’ve been seeing for 10 years.
I think Trump does in fact care about illegal immigration, notwithstanding the likely ways that immigrants have enriched him personally.
He has long been accused of a racist streak, going back to his more active landlording days in Queens.
His demagoguery about the exonerated Central Park Five, his Obama birtherism, and his revealing remarks about shithole countries remind us of this tendency.
The reason why he cares so much about *illegal* immigration is that it gives him an excuse to use the government to punch down on people he doesn't like.
When Trump isn't just pandering but its something he cares about, like tariffs or the stolen election conspiracy, the only *partial* check on him is the stock market.
But when he is just pandering, when he sees public opinion shake too much, he chickens out.
But with this latest ICE stuff, with the Iran War, with the flagrant self-enrichment, with the remaking-D.C.-in-his-image stuff, I just feel like he doesn't care anymore.
I don't know why and I don't like psychoanalyzing people's motives, but I just wonder if he is unable to reconcile the immense power he holds as the most powerful man in the world with his body that appears to be rapidly aging.
nope he doesn't care about anything he learned that being a racist on immigration delivers a lot of votes.
These ICE goons need to be prosecuted.
No pardons for them should be allowed to stand.
There's nothing to prosecute them for.
If a frontline agent has been ordered to perform actions as part of his or her government job *and* been told by the department's official legal counsel that these specific actions are lawful and appropriate, you do not have a crime on their part.
The *mens rea* is not present.
Note that this would not apply to the killers of Renee Good or Alex Pretti unless they can show they received "Shoot to Kill" orders, which is unlikely at best.
Markwayne Mullin and other members of the Trump administration are performing for an audience of one: Donald Trump.
Trump's taken great care to surround himself with people who will tell him what he wants to hear, and he'll eject anybody who pierces his narcissistic bubble.
So, the fact that traffic stops are inherently dangerous and thuggish ICE agents have turned the public against Trump's policies hardly matters: Trump thinks they're great, and he won't hear otherwise from anybody around him.
so only one of then killed the joint legislation that was created to take a better approach you must read too much of The Dispatch which requires bothsidesism to create false equivalents so no one has to admit how awful the republican party is
Maybe when Congress starts actually doing the bare minimum requirement of their job (passing a budget and responsibly managing federal spending) then I'll believe that they're competent to determine how many human beings are allowed to live in this country.
Until then, since MAGA is so determined to insist that we're a Christian nation, I'll continue to have faith that God chooses my neighbor, not man.
Creating a way for people to come here legally is the only way out of this mess.
The only reason that people aren't coming now is out of fear - some segment of the population thinks that good but my hunch is the majority of the country doesn't think things like Mullins statement where we want to be as a country.
We need the labor/skills, we need to vet people, and we need to control the volume of immigrants.
Right now in some countries the wait time to immigrate exceeds life expectancy.
Our lack of a reasonable immigration policy has contributed to this mess.
Agreed.
I look forward to the debate and compromise on numbers and from where.
I hope I live to see it.
The agency lowered its hiring age minimum from 21 to 18 and removed the upper age limit, which was 37 to 40 years old depending on the position.
Hey, Hegseth!
This sounds like a quick way to flood ICE with low-T individuals - you'd better put a stop to it.
The bonus isn't guaranteed, it's broken down into 5 annual 10k payments and it can all be clawed back if the, full five years of service isn't completed.
I'm thinking that they're figuring on getting a lot of those bonuses back.
Setting aside my feelings for a moment that this is a clear example of authoritarianism, if not fascist impulses.
The administration is violating a 101 principle of leadership: Goodhart’s Law.
I think it’s safe to say it’s done with a sort of blasé maliciousness.
“When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure.”
If you measure number of detentions, and then set incredibly (unrealistic) aggressive targets for it, you will create unintended consequences.
Perhaps you enjoy those knock on effects.
If so, the cruelty is the point (as others have written about MAGA).
I think he's undergoing a similar rapid mental decline as Joe Biden did during his term.
God has an ironic sense of humor after all.
I think the Trump you are describing is the one I’ve been seeing for 10 years.
If an intelligent alien (extraterrestrial) observed the wild swings in US immigration policy under Trump and Biden administrations they’d think there has to be a better way.
I suspect they’d also comment “didn’t Congress annually debate allowable legal immigration numbers by country?”
I’m in favor of higher legal numbers if Congress deems it in our national interest.
I hope I live to see it.
We may be forced to…but we will.
The current and last administration practice(d) the same immigration policy: Lunacy.
For the life of me, I cannot fathom how the Biden Administration thought there would be no political fallout from chaos at the border.
And now, I cannot understand how my fellow citizens can tolerate images and practices right out of the Fascist Handbook, including government violence without consequence.
Sadly, I fear that on the Left and the Right, being a “normie” is political poison.
And yet, it’s plain that only a “normie” can govern in a way that’s not insane.
