The sister of missing Elizabeth Waddell – the American tourist who vanished on the Caribbean island of Grenada – said she is “grieving” for her sibling after leaving the agonizing search for the missing mom.
“Today I leave Grenada with a broken heart,” Anna Watkins wrote online Thursday, eight days after her 44-year-old sister suddenly vanished.
“While the missing person investigation remains open, I am grieving.
I am devastated, my heart hurts, and the world around me feels like a blur.”
Waddell, a physical therapist from Cary, North Carolina, was last seen jumping into the water near her Airbnb in the picturesque resort of Grand Anse on July 22.
She has not been seen since then, but Watkins is still holding out hope that her sister, affectionately known as Liz, will be found.
“I've been holding on to that idea this week,” she wrote.
“She's not lost.
She's exploring the sea, still sharing her magic with those around her.”
Watkins also revealed she spent time near Grand Anse Beach – the location where Waddell was last seen before she mysteriously vanished.
“I floated along Grand Anse Beach this morning, spending some time enjoying the beauty of the place she was last seen,” she wrote.
“I imagined Liz's contentment relaxing in the warm calm salty water.”
Mystery surrounds Waddell’s disappearance, but Grenadian authorities and her husband, Cailen Waddell, do not suspect foul play was involved.
She vanished 11 days after first stepping foot onto the island with her pal.
The pair spent the first 10 days of their trip in a hotel on the western side of the island before relocating to another location, which was a pre-planned move.
Waddell was reported missing at around 5:50 p.m. on July 22 – and since then, investigators and her family have been trying to piece together a timeline of her movements before she vanished.
Waddell’s family has since released a video that showed the mom walking through the backyard near her Airbnb at 11:45 a.m. on July 22.
The mom then entered the water two minutes later before her friend adjusted a beach chair at around 11:53 a.m.
At around 12:04 p.m.
Waddell swam toward Grand Anse Beach before going out of shot, according to annotated surveillance footage.
Waddell’s pal – who was reportedly taking an online course inside the Airbnb when the mom went into the water — walked towards the jetty around 40 minutes later but returned alone.
Cailen Waddell said his wife was last seen swimming near Grand Anse Beach at around 5:30 p.m. that day.
