Tuckahoe, N.Y.: In order to sell a questionable product, the ad for Goldfish crackers states, “Goldfish have short memories.”
But goldfish, like most fish, have excellent memories.
Studies have shown that they can retain information for weeks and even as long as five months.
Where’s the truth in advertising?
They’d never promote such lies about people to sell a product, but the animals are a safe target.
Most marine dwellers are actually highly intelligent, far more than we've been willing to give them credit for.
For 20 years, millions have delighted in videos of Emma the Shark enjoying head pets like a puppy from her human ocean visitor, and people who befriend octopuses remark at their cleverness and excellent problem-solving skills.
Negligent, unnecessary practices like fisheries using destructive, large-scale drift nets, and various “adventure” activities, avoid the fact of fish sentience and intelligence.
But people are changing.
The entire New York State Legislature just passed a bill banning octopus farming, a deplorable practice that miserably exploits octopuses in horrible conditions.
We await Gov.
Hochul taking the decent step of signing the octopus farming bill, and we urge Pepperidge Farms and all businesses to tell the truth about animals instead of shamefully lying about goldfish — or any non-human animal who can't defend themselves — just to sell a cracker.

Yet, his batting average of .248 is better than most major league shortstops, better than the Yankees’ overall average of .236, and is tied with Aaron Judge for the fifth best average in the club.
He’s also a good fielder.

Bayside: On July 15, there was a big women's soccer event at Citi Field between the champion NJ/NY Gotham and the runner-up Washington Spirit.
It was an amazing women's event, the biggest in the United States!
I find it odd that there was no coverage by the Daily News or Newsday.
Was it because it was a women's event?
Gotham were the champions of the National Women’s Soccer League two out of the last three years, and they deserve notoriety.
The last time the Mets won was 1986!

Woodside: The 2026 FIFA World Cup was full of surprises, and underdogs exceeded expectations by giving a tough fight, even to past winners.
Ultimately, the super-tactical and geometrical Spanish team won the coveted World Cup in a thrilling 1-0 victory against Argentina.
Besides soccer's status as the most popular game in the world, what’s significant is the unique diversity of the 48 countries that participated.
Interestingly, Curaçao was the smallest nation by population to qualify, and Cabo Verde, the African island nation, made its tournament debut significant by stretching the fancied Argentinian team, thus becoming the darling of soccer fans, especially its savior goalkeeper.
Congratulations to the newly crowned football world champions Spain, and kudos to brave runner-up Argentina for making it to the final with grit and team-spirited, singular focus under the undisputed GOAT, Lionel Messi!

Clearwater, Fla.: Those who condemn the Iran war are not looking at the full picture.
Iran must never have a nuclear weapon, nor does it have the right to control the Strait of Hormuz.
For 47 years, they've been chanting “Death to America.”
Now they have depicted President Trump in an open coffin along with the words “We Will Kill Trump.”
Iran never had intentions of complying with the Memorandum of Understanding.
It was only a means to lie, cheat and delay.
Waiting until we're in imminent danger to strike Iran is already too late.
No one but Trump ever had the foresight and fortitude to disable, disarm and incapacitate Iran.
In the final analysis, Trump's actions will be justified.

Trump wants taxes on Canada’s exports because of its wildfire smoke?
In his gentle response, Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney probably held back from excoriating Trump for having intensified the wildfires himself.
In his first term, Trump repealed five major climate-supporting initiatives of the Obama administration (including withdrawing from the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement).
In his current term, our president is more flagrantly butchering our environment, including unleashing massive fossil fuel exploration, extraction and transportation previously banned by wiser administrations.
These fuels' combustion now causes the trapping of heat close to the Earth, rising temperatures, drying of vegetation and — surprise! — the ignition of wildfires.

Pearl River, N.Y.: Mayor Mamdani should be addressing the poor living conditions in NYCHA before destroying the private apartment rental industry.
This guy is such a clown.
He has no idea how to handle and improve the rental industry, and the people advising him are just as stupid.
People who live in NYCHA housing are living in squalor and horrible conditions.
Not all, but most.
The apartments are almost uninhabitable and not being maintained by NYCHA.
Mamdani and the city of New York are true slumlords and need to address their housing problems first before attacking the private industry.
