Ukraine said its air defenses intercepted five Russian ballistic missiles during a sweeping overnight assault that nevertheless struck multiple locations in Kyiv, damaging warehouses and a school.
The interceptions marked the first time in nearly two weeks that Ukraine reported successfully destroying Russian ballistic missiles, among the fastest and most difficult weapons for air defense systems to stop.
Ukraine’s air force said one ballistic missile and 25 drones penetrated the country’s defenses, striking 17 locations, while debris from intercepted weapons fell in 10 other areas.
Fires broke out at two warehouses in Kyiv, and a school was damaged, according to Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces targeted Ukrainian military-industrial facilities involved in manufacturing long-range missiles and drones.
Ukraine likely relied on its U.S.-made Patriot systems to intercept the ballistic missiles.
Patriots remain Kyiv’s most effective defense against such attacks, but interceptor ammunition has become increasingly scarce as global demand rises and the war with Iran strains available supplies.
The shortage has added urgency to Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its defenses before winter, when Russia has repeatedly targeted the nation’s power grid in an attempt to deprive civilians of electricity, heat, and water.
Zelenskyy Seeks European Missile Shield
As Russian weapons struck Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Paris seeking long-term solutions to Europe’s shortage of ballistic missile defenses.
Ukraine and nine European nations announced the creation of a coalition to develop a shared missile-defense capability capable of protecting European territory.
The participating nations are Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said the coalition could develop an affordable, mass-produced anti-ballistic system within 12 months by combining European industrial capabilities with Ukraine’s battlefield experience.
Ukraine’s presidential office said existing production of Patriot, SAMP/T, IRIS-T, and NASAMS systems remains insufficient to meet the growing threat.
The proposal comes after President Donald Trump said during last week’s NATO summit that the United States would grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot systems.
However, their expense, complexity, and lengthy production cycle mean Ukrainian-built systems may not be available for years.
European Leaders Display Unity in Paris
Zelenskyy received a public show of European support during France’s annual Bastille Day parade along the Champs-Élysées.
Crowds cheered Ukrainian troops as they marched through Paris, while Ukrainian aviators trained in France flew aboard Mirage 2000B fighter jets alongside French pilots.
About 500 foreign troops from nations belonging to the “coalition of the willing” participated in the parade, which French President Emmanuel Macron described as a strategic demonstration of solidarity with Ukraine.
“We are fighting together, and we stand with the people of Ukraine,” Macron said ahead of the parade.
The coalition has pledged to help provide security guarantees for Ukraine following any eventual ceasefire, though Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly rejected ceasefire proposals offered by Kyiv.
Ukraine Strikes Russian Oil Infrastructure
Ukraine, meanwhile, continued its long-range campaign against Russian oil facilities and maritime assets.
An attack sparked a fire at the Afipsky Oil Refinery in Russia’s southern Krasnodar region.
Zelenskyy also said Ukrainian forces struck a refinery in Salavat, roughly 900 miles from the Ukrainian border.
Ukrainian naval forces reportedly struck four tankers belonging to Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, along with a Russian patrol boat.
The aging fleet has helped Moscow evade international sanctions on its oil exports.
Ukraine also claimed that its forces struck 105 Russian vessels in the Sea of Azov between July 6 and July 13, including tankers, cargo ships, tugboats, and a ferry.
Russia said its air defenses intercepted 288 Ukrainian drones during the latest overnight attacks.
Zelenskyy renewed his appeal for an end to the conflict while accusing Moscow of refusing serious negotiations.
“This war must be brought to an end, and all reasonable diplomatic proposals are on the table,” he said.
