DOJ argues the program was intended to compensate Americans who were unjustly targeted by the government, but says it will comply with the court order.
The Justice Department posting this statement on Monday, quote, "This fund was open to anyone who was so weaponized, targeted, or persecuted, whether they were Democrat, Republican, Conservative, Independent, or otherwise."
The anti-weaponization fund was created through a Justice Department settlement tied to lawsuits involving President Trump's tax returns.
The issue has now become tied to Senate Republicans' efforts to pass a funding package for ICE and Customs and Border Protection through 2029.
But, Republicans delayed plans for a Senate vote before recess after some Republicans disagreed with the fund and expressed concerns that Democrats could force politically difficult amendment votes tied to the anti-weaponization fund during the reconciliation process.
Democrats are now signaling they plan to continue pressing the issue if the reconciliation package returns to the Senate floor this week.
