We're starting out this morning with the attack at the White House correspondents dinner Saturday.
The Department of Justice has charged suspect Cole Allen with attempting to assassinate President Trump.
>> ND's Daniel Monahan has the latest on the investigation.
>> Cole Allen appeared in court yesterday.
In addition to attempted assassination, he faces charges of transporting a firearm across state lines with intent to commit a felony and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
Cole Allen's journey of accountability in the criminal justice system starts today.
>> If convicted, Allen could face life in prison and hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch saying violence has no place in civic life.
>> It cannot and will not be used to disrupt democratic institutions or intimidate those who serve them.
And it certainly cannot continue to be used against the president of the United States.
Allan has not yet entered a plea.
Prosecutors say the attack was deliberate and targeted.
>> Make no mistake, this was an attempted assassination of the president of the United States with the defendant making clear what his intent was.
And that intent was to bring down as many of the highranking cabinet officials as he could.
>> Prosecutors have requested he remain in custody.
Allen's detention hearing is scheduled for April 30th and a preliminary hearing will be held on May 11th.
US Attorney Janine Piro saying, "The Constitution and the laws of the United States permit people to register their views through their voices and votes."
>> What they don't permit is making your views known through violence, especially violence directed at the President of the United States.
This is anti-democratic at its core.
>> This one hits a little differently. We were all there. Many of you were there.
Many of you watching were there as well.
The president was there. The vice president was there. The cabinet was there.
>> FBI director Cash Patel says the FBI is coordinating a national scale investigation that spans the country.
>> FBI agents along with the inter agency were immediately dispatched to the suspect's home in California where we conducted interviews that provided critical information about this horrific attack.
Officials say Allan reserved a room on April 6th at the Washington Hotel where the event was to be held.
He traveled by train cross country from California last week, checking himself into the Washington Hilton one day before the dinner with a room reserved for the weekend.
The dinner had barely begun when officials say the suspect raced past a security barricade, prompting an exchange of gunfire with Secret Service agents.
He is very much aware that the president and the first lady entered the ballroom at 8:00 p.m. and it was at 8:40 that he made a decision to rush the ballroom.
>> Allan carried with him a 12 gauge pumpaction shotgun he bought last year and a 38 caliber semi-automatic pistol he purchased in 2023.
He was injured during the attack but was not shot.
A Secret Service officer was shot but was wearing a bullet resistant vest and survived.
The attempted assassination charge carries up to life in prison. The weapons charge carries up to 10 years and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence carries a mandatory minimum of 10 years up to life.
The Department of Justice says it expects to bring more charges against the suspect.
