This 7.1 magnitude quake striking the Kumamato region in southern Japan around 4:30 p.m. local time. 
According to Japanese officials, the quake initially triggered a tsunami warning. 
People were told to get away from the coast. 
That warning has now been lifted, but we are starting to get a sense of the damage. 
There were scenes of real chaos for residents, especially in a local Costco. 
You can see boxes falling off high shelves onto customers in the aisles. 
One witness said some people were trapped by the falling debris. 
We're also tracking what appears to be an explosion at a mall in the region with customers rushing out to the parking lot. 
Unclear if it's directly caused by earthquake damage, but it is in the affected area and multiple people were trapped inside. 
Officials say roads, bridges have buckled across the region. 
People being told not to drive after dark. 
Rail services also suspended, including some of those high-speed bullet trains. and the walls of a 16th century castle that's popular with tourists partially crumbling because of the tremors. 
Authorities say around 50,000 homes have lost power. 
The race is on now to restore electricity. 
And a local hospital tells NBC News it's treating several dozen people for injuries. 
This unfortunately is a region with a lot of experience in this. 10 years ago, a massive quake there killed 275 people and injured thousands
