Overnight, President Trump announcing USnegotiators have reached a deal withHamas to lay down its weapons andrelinquish its control over Gaza. US officials who briefed reporters late last night say Hamas has agreed to disarm and transfer power in Gaza as long as Israel withdraws from the strip.
The proposed move, part of a peace deal announced by President Trump and his newly formed Board of Peace, an international alliance the president has championed to oversee the administration's 20-point plan to end hostilities in Gaza.
>> It'll be responsible for recruiting and training a new government that will be made up of Palestinians along with highly qualified experts from all around the world.
>> But details of the plan are slim, and
Hamas has not gone public in support of the plan.
If the agreement does come to fruition, verifying that the militant group has laid down its arms will be a challenge, as well as convincing some Israeli officials to back the deal.
US official says Trump would be very disappointed if Israel did not follow through on its commitments to support the plan.
However, all these questions haven't stopped the president from declaring victory, posting online that the new technocratic government will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza.
That marks a stark contrast to what Trump had in mind more than a year ago.
>> The US will take over the Gaza strip, and we will do a job with it, too.
>> US officials now say this agreement is a historic step that will benefit Palestinians, though the phase could take months to implement.
All of this, of course, contingent on the full backing of Hamas and Israel, and this late-night announcement, of course, comes as the war with Iran, now in its sixth month, drags on. George, with no sign of stopping.
>> Yeah, it really is widening, Martha.
>> It is. Not only is there no sign of stopping, it is escalating and spreading throughout the region with no clear strategy of how this ends.
A drone strike in Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi, and the Houthis now in a showdown again, and these continued strikes on Iran and threats of larger ones have so far had little effect on the Iranians, George.
>> Yeah, new claims of strikes on Kuwait just moments ago. Martha Raddatz,
thanks.
