All right, CBS News Middle East contributor Courtney Keley joins me now to discuss what's happening inside Iran.
Good morning, Courtney.
And it's so challenging for us to get a real sense and grasp of not just what's happening in the country, but the leadership.
So, clear this up for us.
Is the current state of Iran's What is the current state of Iran's leadership and how might it be factoring into these potential ceasefire and peace talks?
>> It's more of a consortium of leaders and not one linear leader like it was before.
So the supreme leader Ayatollah Hamemeni was killed on the first day of the war and his fa members of his family were killed and his son the successor Moabah Hameani remains unseen now whether he was disfigured whether he lost limbs there are many rumors but he's physically incapable of really appearing so he's become this kind of figure head appears on billboards like from father to son the father is uh has has come back like it feeds into the into the real extreme ideology of this of of this regime that really controls Iran.
So now we're looking at more militaristic and we're more ideological, more apocalyptic.
And I can take you through these names.
>> Well, that would suggest that it will be even more difficult for the US to negotiate something that's amanable to both sides.
Help us flesh out why that may be.
Hani had the veto.
So in June last year uh when Israel struck Iran and when the US did too and hit the nuclear sites, Hani had more restraint.
And so after the first day when Hani was killed, you see Hezbollah who believes in this ideology, this extreme ideology, launch attacks at Israel.
And all of a sudden you see they're not backing down.
They're they're uh blockading the strait.
They're they're attacking.
They have missiles.
They're hitting the Gulf.
So, let me tell you a little bit about who the leadership is now.
So, we have President Masud Peskin.
He's sort of the day-to-day leader, but he really doesn't exert that much control.
We have the foreign minister, Abbas Orochi, and Abbas Orochi, uh, we've seen a lot in the past as a nuclear negotiator.
But now you have the speaker of parliament, Muhammad Ber Khalibah.
He he was the mayor.
He's corrupt, but he's also really in with the IRGC.
So is the national security chief and the head of the IRGC, Ahma.
These are veterans of the Iran Iraq war.
They're veterans of establishing aluds.
And they're really believe in this death cult.
I mean they believe in the the mati will come back if they control if they continue to exert this radical Islamic ideology oppressing people continue executions continue arrest any descent is is cracked down the besieges on the street and I'm hearing from Iranians they're now hearing loudspeakers in Arabic and trucks going around that really aren't Iranians sounds like they're coming in from Iraq and possibly Afghanistan kind of militia to support this regime to filling in this power vacuum which I'll continue to follow but that does not look good.
I'm hearing from people that are in their apartments in Tran hearing these loudspeakers seeing the besiege on the street and they're just really really scared by what's happening now.
>> Sounds like the Revolutionary Guard uh empowered during all of this.
Courtney, great to get your insight.
Thanks so much.
