The Odyssey' stars on being cast and working with Christopher Nolan
After years of war,
no one could [music] stand between my men.
Yeah, it was overwhelming. Really, really exciting. I mean, it's the best role I've ever had a chance to play. I mean, just given the kind of foundational nature of the the story and it's, you know, 3,000 years old and but just the the shooting of it was um incredible. Like the most challenging thing I've ever done.
What you're looking for uh in terms of a new project is you're looking for a way to challenge yourself and you're looking for some way to add something. I mean, that was sort of my point in that speech. You're looking for some way to kind of add something to what's been done in in movies. And uh you know, looking around, looking at the world of Greek mythology and realizing it hadn't really been brought to a modern audience on a on a large scale. Uh so, that for me was part of the excitement of working in this genre, with this this world.
Christopher Nolan as a filmmaker has taken this text that is so well known. I mean, it it is it is taught in so many schools. So many people have a vision of it in their head that's lived there for years and years. It's been handed down generation to generation. And Chris has created something that's totally new. When I saw the film, I realized I didn't actually know the Odyssey.
I just think that that is a testament to who he is as a filmmaker, his his ability you know, take a piece of text, which isn't the easiest piece of >> No. >> work to read. Like I read it and then felt really stupid when I found out they taught it in high school here. I was like, "Wow, this is >> [laughter] >> not the easiest read." Um but no, it was a fantastic experience and I think modern audiences will really resonate with the piece.
>> Tom got the call first and I was like so excited. Like you have no idea. And then he had another meeting and you know, I had secretly read the script with him that night I [laughter] was peeking over his shoulder while he was reading it you know and then he came back from another meeting with Chris and he was like he handed me the script and he was like read it again and I was like okay and he was like but now think of Athena and I was like stop >> [laughter] >> now like you're you're joking so I it was it was really cool he was he was able he was allowed to tell be the one to tell me and that was really special so I just I was already on cloud nine the fact that I was even got to be involved as well was like just a cherry on top
