Now turning to free speech in Northern Europe.

A European lawmaker says an appeal is likely after being convicted on a hate speech charge.

NTD's Daniel Monahan spoke with the Finnish member of Parliament about the case.

>> In a narrow 3-2 decision at the end of March, the Finnish Supreme Court found Parliament member Pa Rasan guilty of hate speech on one charge relating to the expression of her beliefs on marriage and sexual ethics in a 20-year-old church pamphlet.

The court says the conviction is for making and keeping available to the public a text that insults a group.

>> It was shocking and I was disappointed for for that that uh decision of the Supreme Court.

Of course, I was happy to be acquitted for uh in in regard to the uh Bible tweet.

Rasalanin is a medical doctor and has served as a member of the Finnish Parliament since 1995 and was Minister of the Interior from 2011 to 2015.

She says the Supreme Court rejected the view in the pamphlet written in 2004 and shared later online that said homosexuality isn't a natural variation but a deviation.

The court said the text places homosexual people in an unequal position compared with heterosexual people.

I have said very clearly in this pamphlet that uh God has created all people equal.

We all are equal and we all are also sinners.

And what I have spoken is that uh in in the Bible uh it is told that God originally created uh human being as male and female and intended to marriage between these two

man and woman. and and in um in that respect the homosexuality is a deviation from the natural sexuality and not a variation of normal sexuality.

Rasan expressing worry about the ruling >> because I'm not the only one who who thinks so and there are a lot of writings and sermons and speeches also in in our country that are now in danger.

It has also ramifications not only in Finland but also in other European countries which have similar hate speech laws.

So now I'm afraid that there might come more and more criminal complaints against especially Christians.

>> However, in the same ruling, the court unanimously acquitted Rasan for her 2019 Bible verse social media post in which Rasan questioned her church leadership's decision to sponsor a pride event.

The parliament member says she warmly encourages people to be outspoken and open about their faith

>> because the more we are silent, the more narrower becomes the space for these freedoms.

>> The court acknowledged Rosan's text contained no incitement to hate or violence.

The parliament member says she will very likely appeal the ruling.
