U.S. investigating whether Iran hacked dozens of water systems 90%

Well, the government is investigating whether Iran hacked to dozens of water systems in Minnesota.
CBS News Homeland Security correspondent Nicole Skanga is live with the latest on the probe.
Nicole, good morning.
So, what can you tell us about this?
>> Yeah, Michael, good morning.
We know investigations are now underway to determine whether Iran was behind this coordinated cyber attack targeting more than 30 municipal water systems across Minnesota.
Now, these attacks focus on technology that's used to manage the facilities remotely.
So far, it's the breach has forced a handful of communities to temporarily conserve water or switch to manual operations, and officials say there's no indication that Minnesota drinking water quality was compromised.
But, it's just not just Minnesota.
Actually, the FBI says since Monday, water and wastewater utilities in at least seven states have reported incidents.
And in some cases, the hacks have led to pressure loss, flooding.
Officials are now looking to see if Iran's behind this or someone who wants to appear Iranian-based amid the escalating conflict overseas.
We've seen this movie before.
Iranian-linked attackers have previously targeted US water utilities.
A group affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps used a similar playbook to access multiple water and wastewater facilities back in 2023.
All of this comes on the heels of warnings from federal officials.
Water and wastewater systems are increasingly attractive targets for these kinds of cyber actors because they're often small, understaffed, reliant on aging equipment that was later connected to the internet.
Plus, Michael, even limited disruptions, including pressure loss, flooding, or shift to manual operations, can create fear far beyond any immediate damage.
